I find burpees an excellent exercise, but I would advise against them if you are overweight. I would advise you to adjust your diet first before doing burpees. You can find documentation on roidusport.fr

Burpees = 17+16+14+14 = 61

GHDs = 19+16+15+15 = 64

Every burpee round was nonstop if not especially fast. But they left me gasping and I had to pause to catch my breath after every ~6 GHDs.

Last time was 65/69 but I was more rested. Today is my 8th consecutive WOD day since vacation, so I'm calling it comparable.

Globo scale: as rxed or scaled per the chart. If you dont have a GHD, use a roman chair, place your feet under two heavy dumbbells and sit perpendicular on a bench or box and do situps, or sub incline or weighted situps. Equipmentless/bodyweight do 4 rounds of the beginner scaled wod, scale rounds as necessary.

Champions Club Scaling Notes

RANT

This is mean the day after L-sits and ring push-ups.

WORKOUT THEMES

Trying to work right on the edge of muscle fatigue (stamina) and intensity with major movement patterns. Pulling from the hips, changing orientation, core-to-extremity, rigid midline, jumping/landing, global extension/flexion are all themes here.

MAIN DECISION

Do I have the capacity to go fast enough to warrant a rest?

TECHNIQUE SCALE

4 rounds of 2 minutes of each, do like 1/2 or 1/4 ROM on GHD sit-ups and focus on getting the timing right

CONSISTENCY SCALE

4 rounds of:

1:00 push-up

1:00 box jump (step down)

1:00 L-sit

INTENSITY SCALE

As is, sub knees to elbows for GHD sit-ups

INJURY SCALE

Upper-body - sub a 1:00 run for burpees

Lower-body - 5 rounds of: 1:00 push-up, 1:00 knees to elbows

MY STUFF

We have our Olympics Theme Workout this weekend, so I tested that one out. Ouch!

It looks like this individual in the demo is putting their back or lower back in hyper-extension, this seems unhealthy. Can you elaborate or educate me on this?

Comment URL copied!
Creag Donaldson
March 7th, 2022 at 4:04 pm

I would like an answer to this as well. Im observing that obviously this is only optimal once you have demonstrated that you have full capacity through the full range of motion. Before you even allow an individual to move into a degree of Flextion past the neutral mid line.

From this then I expect your building that capacity past that normal range of motion! - obviously this hyper extension is based on your level of experiance and ability with this movement.

Thoughts?

Not sure what qualifies as reasonable for your situation.... try declined sit-ups (with or without a weight/medicine ball), sit-ups off a plyo box/ bench with feet anchored, toes to bar, knee raises (with or without weight), or Ab-mat sit-ups (with or without weight)?

I've got a question regarding the phase from the plank - lowering the chest to the ground - back to plank. I imagine doing the strict pushup with the spine neutral and not moving is the safest method, however I see ALOT of people coaching the method of doing the burpee as a kind of "wave" from plank to the floor back to plank. Is the "wave" more stressful for the lower back and should coaches teach the safer method? Any evidence or experience? Because alot of people can't to a regular pushup. And confronted with the "strict pushup" burpee, they simply can't do it.

I noticed the same thing, Bengi. I have been coaching and CrossFitting for 10yrs and am unfamiliar with a burpee requiring a rigid body (as in a push-up), and this includes the Open. My guess is that one can improvise the ground portion based on their fitness. I do see folks who are very fit utilize a push-up and seem to have extraordinary efficiency with it, but I, personally, can’t. I have always performed and coached the burpee as 1) get chest and thighs on the ground 2) get back up to your feet 3) get some daylight under your feet. Furthermore, I prefer touching my fingers to a target in the burpee to ensure a reach to the sky during the jump.

Either way, variety is the name of the game, and there’s room for lots of burpee variations. Sometimes we even do “sprawls”, where the body doesn’t go to the ground at all as a burpee variant.

As for avoiding flexion/extension through the burpee for safety, as a general rule, it’s horseshit. Spinal flexion and extension in this manner is fine for a healthy spine.

If you keep your butt and belly squeezed, you're actually practicing a good skill by bowing and flexing. On the other hand, if you want to work on the strength part of it you would want to practice the rigid body position. Check out a video called Skill Transfer of the Burpee - it's with Carl Paoli and it's in the Journal and probably on YouTube also.

I call that method of burpees “worming”. I don’t see a problem with it. Consider it a kipping burpee
