Today’s workout was created in 2005 in memory of Navy Lt. Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, New York, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. This workout was one of Mike’s favorites, and he’d named it “Body Armor.” It is now referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

Compare to 230529.

Scaling:
By design, most Hero workouts are meant to be extremely grueling, arduous, and mentally challenging. Many contain a very high volume of reps. Keep in mind that “challenging” is a relative term and athletes should adjust workouts to align with their physical and psychological tolerances. If you are performing Murph, partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Consider 20 sets of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 air squats or 10 rounds of 10 pull-ups, 20 push-ups, and 30 air squats. If you have completed Murph previously, consider performing the pull-ups, push-ups, and air squats unpartitioned. Beginner athletes should reduce the work to a level that is attainable yet still challenging.

Intermediate option:
For time:
Run 1 mile
50 pull-ups
100 push-ups
150 air squats
Run 1 mile

*Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Head out for the second run no later than 25 minutes into your workout.

Or:

Hero workout of your choice.

Review the list of Hero workouts and honor someone with an all-out effort.

Beginner option: For time:
Run 800 meters

Then, 10 rounds of:
5 ring rows
10 push-ups with hands elevated on a box
15 air squats

Then, run 800 meters

*Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Head out for the second run no later than 20 minutes into your workout.

half-way through: A TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR. Had to stop to dig a ziplock out of my gym bag to put my phone in. & stopped again to move my gym bag under some trees for protection. Stainless steel bar got slick so had to start breaking up pull-ups. Had been doing them in sets of 5 UB. Trail run w/ some hills. Pretty muddy on 2nd mile. Mud in my shoes. Wouldn’t have had it any other way. We can do hard things! Love, Prayers, Comfort, & Blessings on the family & friends of those that paid the ultimate sacrifice & gave ALL. 101 Pull-Ups

304 Squats

3,230 Meters on the Asaultbike

The Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, & Squats should be partitioned into 10 rounds with a 10, 20, 30 rep scheme. The odd numbers can be added at any point to any round.

Corporal Jorge Alonso Gonzalez of the U.S. Marine Corps died on 3/23/02 (Hence the two rounds of the assaultbike. He was a member of 1/2 (First Battalion/Second Marines), which is represented by the pull-ups and push-ups. His son whom he never got to meet was born on 3/4, just weeks before his untimely death. Hence the squats. You can read more about this unsung hero here: https://thefallen.militarytimes.com/marine-cpl-jorge-a-gonzalez/256505

Beat last year's by two minutes.

Partitions were by threes, although there was a four, mostly sixes, and when I had to do jumping since our rigs at the box were full and to slow the heart rate down, they were at a pace of 12.

Maxton

Rx (13 rds: 8 strict pull-ups, 26 box step-ups, 21 burpees, all with a 20# plate carrier)

1:34:34 (just survived)

I have done at least 2 Murphs this year and more than I can accurately recall on Memorial Day, so I wanted to do a different workout.

Another reason, and really the main one, for choosing Maxton was to honor the 13 service members (11 Marines, Navy Corpsman (Maxton), and Soldier) killed by a PBIED outside Abbey Gate, Hamid Karzai Airport, Kabul, Afghanistan while conducting non-combatant evacuation operations on 26 August 2021 (hence the round and rep scheme). Though not in country with them, I was part of the ARG/MEU in theater that the Marines and Maxton were assigned to at the time of their deaths. You are gone, but not forgotten, RIP.

A while back I tasked myself with at least one Hero WOD per month: April was Coffland, May was Manion & Murphy. After reading this, Maxton will be June. I'll need to scale the pull ups, but maybe I can manage at least one strict by then...

Great job on this one!

First time trying with the 40-lb vest; almost bit off more than I could chew!  Unbroken pull-ups except one round.  Tried a couple rounds of unbroken push-ups, but breaking was the better decision – usually 7-3.  Slow squats – just trying not to die.  Had to sit down multiple times.  First mile 10:15, second mile 12:30 – was all I could do to not walk.  Worst

Murph ever.  Just awful. "Just Finish It"

My 11th consecutive Memorial Day Murph. Done on at least 7 different courses, in at least 4 states, from flat to hilly and from sea level to 8500'. PR is 35:32 in 2018, worst time is 52:25, done last year on the same course I did today.

Champions Club Scaling Notes

RANT

At our gym I'm known to always find a way to not enjoy a great thing as much as... well... normal people. Like a big Christmas workout with 90 people and everyone's loving it except me because I forgot to empty the trash in the bathrooms the night before and there were like 2 paper towels still in there. That kind of stuff. So... hero workouts. We are a spoiled bunch, CrossFitters. It is humbling to see how when Murph first came out it the general consensus was Is This Possible? and now it's a Normal Fitness Thing. CrossFit has really raised fitness standards across all disciplines I'm aware of and that brings me to the main point of this rant: Where is your choice workout in relation to your skillset? Are you fat, new, old, out of shape, or owning arms made of tapioca pudding? If yes, then just finishing Murph would be a dope accomplishment. Are you CrossFit-Fit? Then it's not a Just Finish It kind of workout, and if you look at a lot of these ones, you'll see that you (speaking to the veterans) are probably capable of pushing the intensity at a pace that you're not sure you'll finish. Why? Because you'll finish. You've been doing CrossFit for this long. We are no longer happy that you finished Murph. You got it like that to make it much more.

MAIN DECISIONS

Pick a workout I'd feel guilty not pushing myself, or pick a workout you'd be happy finishing?

NEW TO CROSSFIT SCALE

Randy, but turn off the timer. 75 chances to practice core to extremity and flat back and butt back on landing

MY STUFF

War Frank - 38:35 as rx'd. Mix between big swinging muscle-ups and minimal kip with false grip. Been working on a lot of scaled strict ones recently and unless it's a coincidence I really felt good on the mu's today. Realized about 1 round in that while this wasn't a burner, it also wasn't a Just Finish It kind of workout for me either. Negative splits on rounds. First time I pushed myself in a few weeks. Been slacking lately for sure.
