Creating a safe space at the whiteboard for athlete questions without fear of judgement is key to building coach-athlete trust. If “what if I can’t do that?” never gets asked at your affiliate, that sounds like a coaching red flag and a missed opportunity to build trust by connecting with the entire class in a way the cares for all athletes, not just the ones who know how to ask “legitimate” questions.
I invite you to reflect on a new coaching policy at Roots: a whiteboard talk is successful if and only if someone asks a question, ANY QUESTION. For questions signal that athletes are listening, that they are focused on what the workout means to them, that they may be giving voice to something you didn’t explain well or that doesn’t make sense. The suggestion that is made in this article that only some questions are “whiteboard appropriate” is a flaw in your plight to build the empathy, compassion and trust fundamental to the coach-athlete relationship.
