Workout of the Day

Guest Programmer – Rob Lawson
April 30-May 12, 2024

For load:
Deadlift 5-5-5-5-5 reps

Finisher:
On a 10-minute clock, build to a heavy Turkish get-up.

Post loads to comments.

Scaling:
Today we’re hitting 5 heavy sets of 5 deadlifts. Allocate a decent amount of time to build up to 80-85% of your 1-rep-max, and then start the heavy sets. If you are moving well, increase the weight each round and aim to hit a new PR around set 4 or 5. You may also stick to the same weight across the board or pyramid up and down in load. Remember, the stimulus is to lift heavy, safely, and have fun doing so!

The Turkish get-up is a great tool to build core strength and shoulder stability. The movement will be a great bit of accessory work to finish off a strength-focused day. Complete this movement with a dumbbell, kettlebell, or even a barbell (most challenging).

Intermediate option:
Same as Rx’d

Beginner option:

Performed on 5/7. I'm a day behind.

205(10). 255(5), 275(5), 295(5), 315(5), 285(5). Pretty happy with that. Shoulder issues prevent a meaningful Turkish get-up.

worked up to a 75lb DB TGU with each arm. Got a 32kg KB TGU with each arm before that but don’t think the KB could have been successful if heavier.

not sure of my PR with x5 DL, but pretty sure anything above 335 is a new record!

DLs:

225-245-265-275-285# (+2 sets at 225 and 1 at 135 after)

Don't know what my 1RM is anymore, so decided to just keep going up until the 5 reps started to make me breathe a little heavier.

TGUs:

Only went up to 40# 1L/1R as that's all the left elbow was going to take today. Many reps though at 15, 25, and 35# left and right to practice the movement. This was the first time doing TGU since my nasty back injury nearly 3 years ago - almost didn't do them today when remembering that but decided to give it a go.

Did a little bit of Maxton prep (minus the burpees) as part of warm-up and cool-down: several sets of pull-ups and box step-ups with a 20# plate carrier.

*6 WEEK MURPH TRAINING - Week 4/6 - Workout 1/5*

As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:

- 5 pull-ups

- 10 push-ups

- 15 air squats

ROUNDS COMPLETED - 20

I’m proud of this one. The pull ups got a little tough, but I managed a round on every minute by

kipping my pull ups. The last few sets of push ups started getting pretty tough, but squats were pretty consistent.

Stimulus:

  • Today’s workout is a great litmus test for Murph.
  • Scale the difficulty of the movements to allow yourself to complete at least 10 rounds of the workout. More advanced athletes may be able to perform a single round in 1:00 or less.
  • Consider this workout a test for Murph. If you complete 10 rounds of today’s workout, you will have completed 50 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, and 150 air squats. This is half of the repetitions in Murph. However, if you perform 20 rounds of today’s workout, you will have completed all of the repetitions in Murph in 20:00 (which is amazing). Use the result of this workout to help you when you are determining your options for Murph.
  • Advanced athletes who have completed the prescribed version of Murph previously can consider performing today’s workout with a vest.

Outside of these daily murph preparation workouts I’ve been doing a morning active stretching/mobility routine and a post workout mobility/stretching routine. I’m trying to get my body open and mobile.

This week I’m counting calories for about 80% of the day to help get my weight down. My goal is 175lbs by October 1st.

Deadlifts:one of my stronger moves, sadly, not enough plates to get near 80-85% of 1RM (@285# per last record I could find) so:

5 @ 65,75,85,95,105#s, then:

15,12,9,6,3 with 105# alternating grips: overhand & mixed with dominant hand under & hook.

TGUs-never really managed this move, but watched some great tutorials & felt surprisingly OK; did them unweighted, to work on form, sequence, then 10# KB, a few with 15# DB, but felt better/safer for my shoulders w. light KB until stronger in the movement. Adding to my list of hard stuff to get better at.

Also, Dear Family: Bouquet of bumper plates in lieu of flowers for Mother's Day?!?

This reply may come too late and I don't know exactly what the limiting factor is (could be space/equipment/injury)

But if I'm guessing correctly and you don't have dumbbells, you could do it with a heavy backpack (e.g. filled with books) or any other heavy (odd) object. A water bottle might be enough to at least practice the movement.
