Commented on: CrossFit Community to Honor Chad Wilkinson, Raise Awareness of Veteran Suicide

I hope you will edit the verbiage to say Chad died "from" suicide, vice "by" suicide. His brain was sick which caused his death; no different from a sick heart or cancer. One dies "from" cancer, not "by" cancer. One dies "from" a car accident, not "by" car accident. The argument is that no one in their "right" mind would do that to themselves, and their brain health led to this terrible outcome.

Blessings to Sara and kids and Wilkinson family.

So I know that many of you have either returned to or just started college. So here is a few quick tips for those of you who find yourselves trying to do these WODs in your campus recreation weight room. These tips stem from my two years in grad school back from 2009-2011.

1. Go to the gym during off peak hours. Generally peak hours for college gyms are from 3pm to 9pm Monday through Thursday. I recommend fitting time between classes or in the morning. Also, if athletes use the campus rec gym know when that happens as you may not have access to some of the equipment more favorable to doing CrossFit WODs. If you are lucky enough to have an area outfitted like a box and/or Olympic lifting platforms take advantage of that.

2. Make friends with the floor staff. If your gym is less favorable to doing CrossFit in, this can help especially if you are Olympic lifting or powerlifting.

3. Gym etiquette: clean up after yourself. Put your equipment away, clean your sweat and chalk, ect. Also inform those nearby if you are doing Olympic lifting in an area not obvious for it. When setting up your station do so in the least intrusive way and minimize transition points.

4. Make a plan and be ready to change it. If it is busy or find some equipment unavailable be ready to change up the workout. Also, if you have mixed elements such as "Helen" for example you may need to sub something for the runs (like burpees) or stick the run at the end after the swings and pullups.

5. If you have a campus CrossFit affiliate or an Olympic lifting club join it. If your college doesn't have an affiliate reach out to your recreational sports board and student organization office. If you get them and enough students and fac/staff on board you collectively can reach out to CrossFit HQ to find out the process to become a college affiliate.
