Admission Hyperglycaemia as a Predictor of Mortality in Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19 Regardless of Diabetes Status
A recent study of 11,312 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Spain found hyperglycemia, or a high blood glucose level, increases a patient’s risk of death, regardless of whether the patient has diabetes. None of the patients were critically ill when they entered the hospital. Hyperglycemia proved to be strongly associated with ICU admission, the requirement of mechanical ventilation, and mortality. The study authors argue, “Screening for hyperglycaemia … should be mandatory in the management of patients hospitalized with COVID-19,” and “hyperglycaemia should not be overlooked in all patients regardless (of) prior history of diabetes.”
