Scientists in Brazil Review Studies on Physiological Responses to CrossFit

“Exercise works as a stressor during and after its execution and can cause inflammation,” Nacipe Jacob et al. explain. “These responses … are vital for host defense and natural tissue homeostasis [and] initiate the elimination of noxious compounds and damaged tissue,” leading to positive adaptations from exercise. Here, Jacob et al. “systematically explore the existing literature on characterization of hormonal, metabolic, and inflammatory responses resulting from CrossFit training.” The authors note the studies under consideration have methodological limitations but together demonstrate “the potentially significant effect of CrossFit training” on the body’s stress responses, as well as potential areas for additional research for more effective training in the future.
