This letter is from CrossFit Headquarters, which plays host to a cadre of independent thinkers who come from all walks of life and hold many different beliefs. Despite our differences, we are united in our commitment to a visionary approach to health and fitness and our mission to bring that vision to the larger community. We love CrossFit. It is our common ground.
We disappointed you.
It hurt you and us. We need to talk.
The CrossFit community is in need of peace. This year has put unrelenting pressure on us all, exposed unaddressed flaws, and been near unbearable for many.
Change is needed. We all need healing.
Exhaustion and a long history of silent grievances have been laid bare on social media. We cannot change what has happened, but we ask for forgiveness while we thoroughly examine ourselves.
Why Did Greg Say That?
Greg Glassman founded CrossFit and is responsible for delivering a life-changing and paradigm-altering truth. The methodology he created provides an elegant solution to the problem of chronic disease ravaging our world today. He is passionately focused on that message and its implications. He relentlessly attacks those who dilute or deny essential truths.
That does not excuse the fact that Greg’s statements were incredibly insensitive and hurtful. Please accept our deepest apology for contributing to the pain and confusion permeating our community — a community we love and respect for its vibrancy, strength of spirit, and diversity.
The Community
CrossFit is a collection of many voices. Though we have never spoken to you with this degree of candor outside the realm of fitness and health, we are taking the step to do that now.
CrossFit affiliates, trainers, athletes, and other members of this community have shouldered the burdens and reaped the benefits that come with sharing in CrossFit’s life-changing message.
Over the years, we have not always communicated with the community on time. We have not functioned like other organizations, and the affiliates have had to trust us in some impossible moments. This time we asked for too much patience from our community. And recently, when the world was already under incredible pressure, we were not there for you online. We were not there for you in our communications.
We Publish the Truth
We pride ourselves on authenticity and truth, but we got it wrong by failing to tell you we really care about black people and support the need for real change.
We weren’t sure how to get the message right, and as a result, we failed catastrophically by not effectively communicating care for the Black community, all as the online world was watching and experiencing extreme pain.
We, the members of CrossFit HQ, have failed to meet a moment when the community wanted to hear from us most. For that, we extend our deepest and sincerest apologies. We are sorry.
The online community is passionate and powerful. It reflects a collection of thoughts, ideas, moments, and interests. It forges deep connections, unity, profound division, and everything in between. We know this community comprises an active and vocal population as well as an equally silent but vigilant cohort that has been waiting patiently. It is a great responsibility and honor to serve as its stewards and defenders.
The Truth
The Black community is hurting around the globe. The community called upon us to speak, and we improperly answered. That was a mistake. We heard you and got in our own way while trying to figure out how to convey our message truthfully without following a trend, shaming, or creating division.
We Support Diversity and Inclusion
It is rare for us to speak on these types of issues. We struggled the past few weeks because we allowed our desire to get it right to paralyze us. Tackling social justice issues of this magnitude is not our strength as a company, because our varied points of view sometimes devolve into dysfunction. But we can agree on two things: We are a team dedicated to fitness and health. This team is anti-racist. Therefore, we are committed to scrutinizing ourselves internally, continuing to listen to the community, and taking actions in support of change.
Greg believes in equality. Greg made a mistake. His communications will have to be reconciled with the person we know. He is being put on trial online, and we challenge you to be thorough in your review of a man who is imperfect but sincere in his love of helping others to become better while creating opportunities for others to do the same. He does make mistakes, but he has done more than anyone for this community and created unimagined opportunities for others. If you measure Greg Glassman, do it thoroughly.
But none of this has any bearing on the need for reform, reconciliation, and change.
Why Were We Silent?
As a team, we do not see eye to eye on every issue. We have internal disagreements on the nuances of everything you see published online. We aim for the truth. We are highly critical of ourselves, at times to our detriment.
We struggled to speak to the Black community because we overly complicated the need to care and respond. The same scrutiny we bring to assembling an article on CrossFit.com is not needed for telling the Black community we love them and we support them. We have not properly done the work to make it clear that you are welcome and wanted in this community.
The Black Community Is Strong
We care about black lives in every respect and in every aspect of society. That means we support the black police officer who upholds justice, like retired officer David Dorn, as strongly as we cannot stand for the injustice George Floyd faced two weeks ago. Both truths are possible and can coexist.
Speaking Outside of Fitness
How do you speak effectively, accurately, and authentically to a community you love so much when what’s at stake is the possibility of irreparable division?
We still do not know.
But this team will continue to pour its heart out in service of the community. We are flawed, we make mistakes, but we are pure in our intentions, and we will continue to engage in rigorous self-examination and self-betterment, because we owe you that much and so much more.
Social Media Has Incredible Potential
Social platforms are powerful, and the activity on them can amplify unity and contribute to meaningful change. Or it can polarize and divide. That power should be respected. The platform provides a permanent record of momentary thoughts and evolving beliefs as well as grave mistakes and wrongdoings — often while offering no clues that would allow one to distinguish between the two. Human interaction allows for more context and candor. Both types of interaction should be properly respected and valued. We must respect our responsibility to both forms of communication and be accountable to those who trust us.
We Are Strong Together
Despite our many disagreements, we are unified in the most important areas. We stand against racism. The valuing and antagonism of another human based on race is abhorrent and wrong. It is not welcome here. We stand against injustice. We were collectively traumatized as we witnessed the murder of George Floyd. His murder was inhuman and wrong.
This Message Is Late, Long, and Imperfect
This is the message we should have sent to the community we love. We know we are too late, but here we stand. Please review this apology and take a moment to pause, reflect, and digest what we have said. Our team sees the decisions being made in reaction to our founder’s actions as part of the healing process that is much needed for many around the world. However, we want to reach out to all who may be willing to forgive us as we work through an internal acknowledgement of our faults and find a way forward that allows for true healing and repair. For some, the break may be irreparable. We understand and wish you well regardless. We’re going to do what we can to be better with the hope of building a better world on the other side of this.

Comments on Why Didn’t CrossFit Just Say Something?
Dear CROSSFIT, Inc. and Mr. Dave Castro
My name is Luiz Sérgio, i live in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro State/Brazil and i'm an affiliate owner and a L2 CF trainer..
I'm 54 years old now and would like to share how Crossfit changed my life in the past 6 years.
I'm a Lawyer and that was my only occupation until i get to know what some friends called Crossfit at my Gym back then.
Since our first training sessions i was completely in love by the methodology and the spirit behind the training..this happened in 2013.
In 2014 i was already doing my Level 1 Seminar..six months later i became a L2 CF Trainer..then, i started my Degree as a Professional Physical Educator here in Brasil, cause it's a necessary to give lessons here..it's a 4 year course.
In 2017 i became an affiliate owner when i opened CROSSFIT TROIA OCEANICA..
So, i became an Intern Teacher at my own box until i got my diploma..and finally, i became a Professional teacher at my box.
meanwhile, i did several specialty courses as well: COMPETITORS, GYMNASTICS, AEROBIC CAPACITY, JUDGE and others..
I'm a proud Master Athlete as well..i do compete in the Open seasons since 2014..
So..i invested a lot of time and money to become a member of this community..and i'm proud of it..i do not complain about the decisions i've made since those firts training seasons back in 2013.
So..i'm telling you this story because i think it's important for you guys to know your affiliate members..their stories..their lives..their dreams and hopes..their sacrifices to be part of Crossfit Community.
Once you know my story of life, let's got to the present and some of my thoughts about everything that is going on..
i'll not talk about GG..i'd rather talk about future..so, here it goes:
1 - DAVE AND HQ MEMBERS..DO YOU REALIZE THE OPPORTUNITY YOU HAVE IN YOUR HANDS? TO BRING ALONG THOUSANDS OF NON AFFILIATE MEMBERS? TO HELD THE ONES THAT ARE STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS GIGANTIC BOTH ECONOMICAL AND SANITARY CRISIS?
2 - DO YOU REALIZE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE CROSSFIT REALLY INCLUSIVE AND A LIFE CHANGING MESSAGE FOR SO MANY PEOPLE THAT COULD NOT LISTEN TO YOU YET?
How would it happens??
1 - BY MAKING A PROFOUND CHANGE IN YOUR AFFILIATE ECONOMICAL POLICY..YEAH..MONEY..THAT'S THE MAIN PROBLEM FOR US FOR A LONG TIME..SPECIALLY THE AMOUNT CHARGED TO BECOME AND TO MAINTAIN OUR AFFILIATION..THE ACTUAL FACTS JUST GAVE THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO SO MANY DEFILIATIONS..I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT..LOTS OF MEMBERS ARE NOT GETTING OUT ONLY BECAUSE OF GG DEEPLY DEPLORABLE STATEMENTS..IT'S BECAUSE WE'LL NOT BE ABLE TO SUPPORT PAYING US$.3.000,00 AND DON'T HAVE ALMOST NOTHING IN RETURN IN TERMS OF SUPPORT, COMMUNICATION, INCENTIVE TO DEEPEN OUR KNOWLEDGE (i've done several Courses and never got a discount to keep doing others courses..even being an affiliate owner)..
2 - BY IGNORING THE MULTIPLICITY OF ECONOMICAL REALITIES AROUND THE WORLD FOR EXAMPLE, YOU MADE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR LOTS OF MEMBERS TO GO ON BEING AFFILIATED...FOR EXAMPLE: US$.1,00 COSTS US ALMOST R$.6,00 NOWADAYS..SO, US$.3.000,00 BECOMES R$.18.000,00 IN BRAZIL..THAT'S A LOT OF MONEY FOR US..AND YOU CAN ADD THE RENT OF THE SPACE, THE TEACHERS SALARIES, TAXES, LIGHT, WATER, EQUIPMENT AND SO ON..AND I'M NOT EVEN ADDING OUR PROFIT AS A BUSINESS..THAT FORCES US TO HAVE A VERY HIGH COST OF MONTHLY TAX TO OUR CLIENTS AS WELL..AND THAT COST, TAKE AWAY MANY CLIENTS TO OTHERS GYMS, TO NON AND CHEAPER AFFILIATE BOXES..
3 - AND THAT TAKES ME TO ANOTHER IMPORTANT POINT: IF THE METHODOLOGY IS OPEN, AND ANYONE CAN BECOME A L1 TRAINER AND HAVE ACCESS TO CROSSFIT TRAINING SYSTEM, OPEN A NON AFFILIATE BOX, WHATS THE POINT OF STILL PAYING US$.3.000,0 TO YOU GUYS, IF JUST NEAR ME ANOTHER GUY CAN OPEN A BOX, OFFER THE SAME TRAINING METHODOLOGY AS MINE, TAKE AWAY MY CLIENTS BECAUSE HE'S CHEAPER JUST BY NOT HAVING "CROSSFIT" IN HIS NAME? UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN?
4 - I DO REALIZE THAT HAVING THE NAME "CROSSFIT" IN MY BUSINESS WAS REALLY IMPORTANT A FEW YEARS AGO..BUT NOWADAYS, THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE OFFERING FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS, CONSTANTLY VARIED AND INTENSE TRAINING..AVERAGE PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW WHAT'S THE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MY CLASS AND THE NON AFFILIATE ONE..UNDERSTAND? AND THAT'S A REASON FOR SO MANY PEOPLE CHOOSE NOT TO BE AN AFFILIATED MEMBER..WITH THE CRISIS AND RECENT FACTS INVOLVING THE COMPANY IT BECAME MUCH BIGGER..
5 - BUT, THE MAIN POINT IN MY OPINION IS THE CHANCE TO SPREAD THE WORD OF FITNESS AND BRING MORE AND MORE PEOPLE INSIDE THE BOXES AND MORE AND MORE BOXES IN THE CROSSFIT COMMUNITY... THE CHANCE OF MAKING CROSSFIT AFFORDABLE TO MORE AND MORE PEOPLE IN POOR COMMUNITIES AS WELL..THE ACTIONS YOU MENTIONED IN YOUR LETTER ARE TRULY NICE..WE DO A LOT OF ACTIONS AS WELL HERE...BUT, COULDN'T WE DO MORE? AND CONSTANTLY? NOT ONLY ON SPECIFIC DATES OR EVENTS?
6 - BESIDES THAT, AS YOU AGREED IN YOUR STATEMENT, THERE IS A LACK IN "PAY BACK" TO THOSE THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS WE PAY YOU..
AS I SAID: I NEVER GOT A MINIMUM DISCOUNT TO DO OTHER SPECIALTY COURSES!! NOT EVEN BEING AN AFFILIATE MEMBER, NOT BECAUSE I'VE DONE SEVERAL COURSES ALREADY..YOU DO NOT ENCOURAGE US TO KEEP ON IMPROVING OUR KNOWLEDGE..WE DON'T SEE YOU GUYS INVESTING IN ACTIONS TO BECOME MORE VISIBLE AND KNOWN AS COMPANY, AS A COMMUNITY..LET ME EXPLAIN..SOCIAL MEDIA IS THE ONLY WAY TO SPREAD CROSSFIT VALUES? I DON'T THINK SO..WHAT ABOUT OFFERING TOOLS AND WAYS FOR LOCAL ACTIONS BY CREATING MORE LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES? BY ENDORSING OTHER KIND OF MEDIA ACTIONS TO HELP US BRING MORE PEOPLE INSIDE OUR BUSINESS?
WHAT ABOUT CREATING MORE DISCUSSION FORUNS AND HAVE A CALENDAR TO BRING THE AFFILIATES TO DISCUSS THINGS?
7 - SO, THE THING IS: AFFILIATE FEES MUCH LOWER AND RESPECTING THE REALITY OF EACH COUNTRY..I REALIZE YOU NEED TO SURVIVE..YOU'RE NOT A CHARITY INSTITUTION..WE KNOW THAT..BUT THE IMPRESSION WE HAVE ALONG THE YEARS IS THAT YOU WHERE A VERY PROFITABLE AND CAPITALIST COMPANY..EXPENSIVE AFFILIATION FEE, EXPENSIVE COURSES, THE OPEN SEASON WITH THOUSANDS OF REGISTRATIONS, THE SPONSORS , ETC..WE KNOW YOU'RE GONNA FACE SOME HARD TIMES AS WELL..BUT, YOU CAN GO BY ANOTHER PATH..BY MAKING AFFORDABLE TO MORE AND MORE BOXES BECOME AFFILIATED, TO MAKE AFFORDABLE TO MORE AND MORE PEOPLE DO THE COURSES, BY LICENSED PRODUCTS WITH CROSSFIT MARK..DON'T GET RICH..GET BIGGER!!
8 - AND FINALLY: WE MUST REMEMBER THAT WE, AFFILIATE OWNERS HAVE TO SURVIVE..WE GOT TO BUY NEW EQUIPMENT FROM TIME TO TIME..WE HAVE TO INVEST IN OUR BOXES MAINTENANCE..WE HAVE TO PAY OUR STAFF PROPERLY...WE HAVE TO PAY THE RENT...SO, R$.18.000,00 A YEAR HELP US A LOT TO DO THAT..LET US BREATHE!
I know you've heard everything i said before..but maybe, not so much from a Brazilian affiliated member.. Make the changes..stand for whaT's is really important..health, fitness, wellness, inclusion, racism, diversity..SPREAD THE WORD THAT IT'S WORTHY TO BE A MEMBER OF THIS COMMUNITY!!
As a box, as an athlete, as a regular costumer..
Sorry for such a long statement..hope you get to read this..because you own us that!
Tks for changing my life and the lives of so many of my customers..
CROSSFIT TROIA has three units..we're strugling to survive..we've been closed since March, 16th..
At this moment, we can't afford to pay an affiliation fee..so, we hope you understand that and give us a chance to keep on being an affiliated box..we really do!

CROSSFIT TROIA OCEANICA
If Greg’s tweet had to do with criticism of models coming from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation @IHME_UW and not racism, it would certainly be consistent with views he has expressed in the recent past. His retweets include one on 16 April this year, a celebration of The Economist examination of "the alarming cost of hard lockdowns", and another on 26 March, celebrating a dramatic reduction of estimated deaths from COVID in the UK. Greg remarked in the first few days of June: "I think guidelines come from a cabal of industry, government, and academics, and routinely serve the public quite poorly. I have witnessed that process on several fronts".
I think that the firing of the Philadelphia Inquirer editor over the headline "Buildings matter, too" can be used as a possible comparison to Greg's tweet. Any equating of "black lives" with buildings is odious and indefensible, as Matt Taibbi pointed out recently: https://taibbi.substack.com/p/the-news-media-is-destroying-itself, just as equating of a virus with "black lives" is odious and indefensible (as well as ill-timed and incendiary). No argument there!
There is however a critical issue that needs to be addressed that concerns both tweets: the issue of outright censorship and taboos/fear over detailed discussion of certain very complex issues. The Philadelphia Inquirer editor was fired for running a headline that defended the right to protect property - a view shared "by 89% of the population, including 64% of African-Americans". Greg Glassman was condemned for a tweet which questioned the validity of the data behind lockdown models - validity which has also been questioned by University Professors, Viral Researchers, and even Nobel Prize Winners https://thefatemperor.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Ep78-Stanford-Professor-and-Nobel-Prize-Winner-Explains-this-Viral-Lockdown-Fully-2.pdf which has discriminately impacted minorities and the poor.
HOW both individuals headlined their argument certainly can be criticized and outright condemned, but in both of these cases the broader issues were never dissected by the bulk of articles reporting them.
As Taibbi writes about the editor's firing:
"why not just make this case in a rebuttal editorial? Make it a teaching moment? How can any editor operate knowing that airing opinions shared by a majority of readers might cost his or her job? The main thing accomplished by removing those types of editorials from newspapers — apart from scaring the hell out of editors — is to shield readers from knowledge of what a major segment of American society is thinking. It also guarantees that opinion writers and editors alike will shape views to avoid upsetting colleagues, which means that instead of hearing what our differences are and how we might address those issues, newspaper readers will instead be presented with page after page of people professing to agree with one another. That’s not agitation, that’s misinformation."
A must listen Sam Harris episode #207 (Can We Pull Back From The Brink) argues that: "Conversation is the only tool we have for making progress." "All we have between us and a total breakdown of civilization is a series of successful conversations." "This systematic silencing of others is less about truth than what it means to say something is true" "There is so much we don't know, and people are acting like every important question has already been answered." https://samharris.org/podcasts/207-can-pull-back-brink/
What percentage of the population supports the opinion that quarantine is a failed model? But also: has there been a fair consideration with fair airtime/promotion given to whether or not quarantine *could* be a failed model? Many prominent researchers support the opinion that the lockdown has done more harm than good. We need to be critically examining this data, in order to insure the same mistakes won't be made in the future.
According to one recent paper: https://www.academia.edu/42829792/What_Went_Wrong_Corona_and_the_World_after_the_Full_Stop
"How was it possible for a virus to trigger such a massive response that continues to threaten society and the economy, with so little discussion about the costs and consequences of extreme measures? Why is there widespread agreement that aggressive interventions to“flatten the curve” were necessary and justified? It seems that this unprecedented public health experiment occurred without sufficient consideration of the social, political and economic consequences. The failure to take into account the impact of extreme measures that have become the norm in many places in the Covid-19 pandemic has been stunning. The destruction of lives and livelihoods in the name of survival will haunt us for decades"
Here is an opportunity for education and further discussion, not for censorship. Anytime you start to suppress opinions you run the risk of hiding arguments that turn out to be more valid.
Failure to allow questioning of authority can bring us scandals like Surgisphere's or #LancetGate recently exposed by Dr. James Todaro, an MD who managed to catch in his spare time shortly following his child's homebirth what professionals at WHO, CDC, Harvard & The Lancet's peer-review process failed to expose. Because of his involvement in an early, very small but successful study of hydroxychloroquine https://drive.google.com/file/d/186Bel9RqfsmEx55FDum4xY_IlWSHnGbj/view, James Todaro, MD was highly interestested in subsequent studies. When The Lancet published a study wildly contradicting his own research, Dr. Todaro decided to actually look into the study. Here are his findings: https://www.medicineuncensored.com/a-study-out-of-thin-air
and his subsequent interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HYK5pL2Z_s&feature=youtu.be
How many lives did subsequent censorship around discussion of hydroxychloroquine put at risk? Here a whistleblower and US Army veteran shows disturbing evidence of New York public hospital fraud at the "COVID epicenter" disproportionately impacting/killing minorities https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2123&v=UIDsKdeFOmQ&feature=emb_logo
In a tweet of his interview from 12 June, Dr. Todaro posted "Throughout history, discoveries that challenged the “experts” of the era always faced censorship. Today, it is imperative that social media platforms allow the free exchange of ideas."
CrossFit Health is an indispensable platform online which has been elevating critical voices which highlight the importance of data transparency, full disclosure of funding sources/COIs, and critical examination of published research with its deeply flawed peer-review process. Of course when CrossFit's CEO who is hosting all those disruptive voices does something easily construed as racism, there will be a significant number of high level social media-platformed sharks with large budgets circling in the water. This is exactly the wrong time to abandon CrossFit. We are dealing now with a crisis of lack of confidence in public health messaging. Hours after insisting on the necessity of quarantine and social distancing, the same public authorities approve the health and safety of protests. We find out there really wasn't/isn't much evidence behind the social distancing prescription anyway https://www.zoeharcombe.com/2020/06/social-distancing-the-evidence/ These issues need to be elevated and discussed, despite being extremely controversial and complex discussions which piss a lot of people off. Where else can we do that other than here on CrossFit's platform? Available outlets for discussion are vanishing shockingly quickly. Chronic disease kills millions each year - much more devastating than COVID. The public's free access to solutions is being hijacked by corruption that is absolutely epidemic in health/pharma research. Why is CrossFit one of the only organizations talking about addressing the chronic disease epidemic in order to lower public risk of COVID complications? Where are our public health watchdogs entrusted with safeguarding public health? Bought by the vaccine industry? We know how fast lifestyle changes can reverse diabetes - how many of us have successfully accomplished that in our very own Boxes!!! In a matter of weeks!! Are we now afraid to post "flatten the curve" beer-belly images for fear we might be accused of fat shaming? We can't stand for this type of ridiculous taboo on sane conversations about health, and we have to start sticking up for one another. For the sake of public health! We have to keep our conversation channels open! We have to keep our minds open!
I joined other affiliates in condemning Greg Glassman's recent tweet. In my opinion his explanation and apology were 100% genuine and I know this differs from the opinion some have expressed here & in other places online. I hope that a panicked concern with being associated with the "right side" of the argument never allows us to lose sight of the efficacy & necessity of debate. Greg Glassman was wrong to tweet what he did, and has said he was wrong. The event needs to educate us all and shape detailed conversation and policies regarding race-relations going forward. It can not be allowed to stifle CrossFit's further elevations of controversial discussions related to public health!! I regard this CrossFit forum as not only an excellent resource for health insights but also a safe space where I can both express & get the opportunity to subsequently defend my opinion. I am so grateful for CrossFit in my community's lives & am very confident in its continued ability to lead many more to health.
WELL SAID AND THANK YOU!
I love to hear that you pride ourselves on authenticity and truth. It gives me hope, that HQ will also apply these same principles when dealing with a response to Andy Stumpf´s latest comments in his Cleared Hot podcast. Somehow I doubt it, but I´d be happy to be positively surprised. It´s also interesting to see how many comments here are still saying why so much fuzz about one short tweet. Do your research. Read up. See what this is all about and then form your opinion. I love CrossFit. I am doing it for years and it pains me to see how the name has become tainted. When I put on my workout clothes in the morning I can´t even bring it over my heart to wear anything that says CrossFit right now. I am ashamed of it. I do not want anybody to believe that I am a man of such despicable behaviour as Greg Glassman. I do not want to be associated with him. And every single day more and more details come out that make it harder and harder. I believe in values. So do many in our global community. So far what HQ has done is damage control. I haven´t seen any change so far. I am sincerely hoping for it, but I still have many doubts that it is possible and will happen. You promised change. Don´t break our hearts by not delivering on your promise.
When CF HQ hosts an 8 minute 49 second taking a knee for every box at each session for one day, baby steps are made.
Your heart might be in the right place, but I don't think you understand the affiliate model. Each and every CrossFit box is independently owned and operated. HQ doesn't dictate what equipment they use, how much they charge or even what workouts they do. I think many affiliates would be outraged if HQ forced them to take a knee, even if it was a gesture they support.
I have been a CrossFitter for approximately 12 years. I have also been fortunate to have competed at the Games for 3 years, judged regionals for 7 and also judged the Games for 3. At age 72, I can say I have seen my fair share of life, not to mention my fair share of CrossFit. Needless to say, Coach Glassman’s comments were insensitive, hurtful and damaging. He made a big mistake. I know the CrossFit community focuses on fitness and health. How about focusing and demonstrating some mercy, grace and forgiveness for a man who has singularly been committed to being the “Tip of the Spear” in taking on many Goliath’s for humanities well being. I am profoundly surprised and disappointed by some who sought to distance themselves and otherwise walk out from Greg and CrossFit. Helping, educating, healing a man from wounds self inflicted and otherwise, is a tough WOD. THE RECONCILIATION WOD.....
I'm a 72 year old CrossFit athlete also and have been around. CrossFit's response is weak. When Glassman et al can publicly take a knee with other CrossFit athletes for 8 minutes and 49 seconds then he can begin a healing and earn redemption.
So we are to believe you were at PAINS to get the message SO RIGHT about what you believe in... And we're ended up with nothing but juvenile and disparaging at best, downright racist-cum-conspiracy theory laiden comments at worst after more than TWO WEEKS of silence.... But then within a couple days (and sans lots of big-money sponsors) later, you got the words perfect enough to publish??? 🤔🤔
You must take us for absolute fools. I'm ecstatic my box IMMEDIATELY disaffiliated. Glassman simply got caught expressing his true flippant thoughts on race, race relations, and public health policy. He clearly thinks either merit little respect or attention. It took losing lots of money quickly for CFHQ to tuck it's tail. Which is evidently more emotion than a man being calmly murdered evoked. We're not idiots you know... But nice journal entry. Nice try.
Jeff - you nailed it. Thanks.
What if Glassman is not a racist? What if he was attacking IMHE for attacking all of us including BlackLivesMatter with their insane quarantine mandates?
NAILED IT
The fact that you had so much difficulty speaking about "the black community" indicates a lack of diversity at CF HQ. If you had that diversity, you could have just asked them for guidance. Make this your first task in fixing CF: real diversity at the corporate level. It exists at the gyms; reflect that at the top.
Definitely
How about “Who cares what CF thinks, anyway?” There is no winning in any of this and whatever a company does or doesn’t do should affect your lives not at all. Be a good person, and disregard completely what CF or any other company does.
Like button.
You who are without fault can cast the first stone. Don’t let the media destroy our community of athletes. Quit looking for a sacrificial lamb (already been done) for every grievance you have. To destroy a man’s career over one word is ludicrous regardless of race, color, income, whatever! You want to make political statements go join a political group and have at it. Here at Crossfit we work hard, sweat, some swear, and we ALL fist bump At the end. Shut-up and WOD!
I know, not the most eloquent, and for sure someone will be “offended” I am not making an intolerance stand for all that is wrong in the world. However, a little grace (look up what this means) goes a long way toward healing.
I have known Greg Glassman for 40+ years as a close friend and a mentor. He was the only person who believed in me as a late teen. He schooled me on the elegance of mathematics and the sciences and instilled in me a belief that I could accomplish great things. He was right. Because of his selfless interest in me and my future, I was able to attend and graduate from a top college, one of the best medical schools in the country and complete training at one of the finest hospitals in the world, The Cleveland Clinic.
Why do I tell you this...
Because, this is Greg Glassman's pattern. I have lived it and witnessed it throughout the decades as his close friend. A SELFLESS interest in and devotion to others. This is a man who took his money and built schools and water cisterns in Africa for black Kenyan children. He would then talk to the village elders about the importance of clean water and the value of education. Is this the action of a racist?
Greg Glassman has done more good for more people (by orders of magnitude) than I could ever hope to achieve, and I am a tirelessly working doctor.
Does he deserve to be drug over the white hot coals? Does he not deserve some grace for all he has done and continues to do for others? Think about it and try not to be so quick to judge.
Agreed and more than that. What is it so bad that he did? He tweeted one word? A word that questions the sincerity and accuracy of a Gates funded IHME?
Bravo, CrossFit.
Apology accepted. Let's move on. Dave... do your best and surround yourself with good people.
For those who will settle for nothing less than completely destroying a man who has actively DONE more than most to make this world a better place for everyone (in spite of his ill-conceived words)... it's probably best that they go... wisht hem well.. best success and all that. but many of them have had a problem with CrossFit for a long time...
I'm holding on to this comment from the apology "But none of this has any bearing on the need for reform, reconciliation, and change." I can't state how much we want to stay affiliated. Our fee is due the end of this month and it will be decided based on your action to this comment. If in the next couple of weeks we see signs of a reform within the the leadership of Crossfit, more than Glassman retiring, then we will stay. If not we'll be gone. I was on the forum yesterday with Sherwood, Froning, Spealer, etc and that's a pretty popular view right now so I'd take this to heart.
John Logan - Owner of Crossfit Infinity
What exactly did Glassman say? How can virtue signaling by the likes of Nike - one of if not the biggest sweatshop owning mfrs on the planet negate the value of Glassman's extraordinary life? He was criticizing IHME, right? What was that criticism? What is IHME's record? Last I checked they're pushing a diet that is considered flawed if it does not have enough, fruit, whole grains, polyunsaturated fats and too much red meat?
Have they contributed to health anywhere near what CF has? And if Glassman did not say it enough, then we did - BlackLivesMatter. And he did by his being the man most in the face of those who push chronic degenerative diseases down the throats of all of us and especially the black community. Please do give us some examples of people (especially if they work for Nike or Reebok) who have done more to reverse disease for all of us.
This criticism of Glassman makes it sound like he attacked IHME for saying BLM. My sense is that he attacked them for their flawed science and their virtue signaling to exploit an issue.
Nailed it.
100%!!! I would add, where would all these people be without Greg?
You did stay silent. You continue to ask a community (that I believed stood for inclusivity) to economically benefit someone whose stated values are repugnant. Get him out. If it becomes a choice between CrossFit and principles, it’s not going to be much of a contest.
What stated values are you talking about? Please link to where he states such repugnant values.
I login. I do the WOD. You don’t need to virtue signal. Let each man be paid in full.
CrossFit should be a registered 501c Non-Profit.
“Why Didn’t CrossFit Just Say Something?” Well my issue is that they did... More than once. That’s why we are here to begin with! Repeatedly, this article claims HQ remained silent on social justice issues because collectively their voices were paralyzed by the fear of failure and the pursuit of perfection. This very article was written in response to the fact that HQ was not silent in the end and the comments made were apathetic and less than perfect. Maybe this core value was lost on Greg.. Regardless, ultimately CrossFit HQ, through the words of Greg Glassman (the buck stops with Greg, as it does with any CEO), commented on social issues both privately and publicly over the course of several days. The ‘we were silent because we were overthinking it’ excuse hardly seems valid when (A) CF was not silent in the end by extension of GG, (B) the comments were thoughtless and impulsive, and (C) no effort was made to correct the messaging from the bottom-up, which was made without collective agreement or consideration by HQ. I get you don't want to make a mistake with your messaging, but the mistake was already made! Own it. Fix it! It’s convenient that HQ is attempting to distance themselves from GG now, however it’s hardly convincing when he remains the majority owner and key influencer for the entire organization. It’s hard to believe at this point that this is a genuine apology but rather an equivocation. Greg must divest himself from CF completely for people to take this seriously! Also, just apologize and move forward. Don't pass the buck and make excuses. Also, it's not hard to just state "Black Lives Matter". Simple as that. Not much to overthink there. Rant over.
Thank you David Brunker! Perfectly said!
Facts!
What facts. Please link to what horrific insensitive things Greg and CF said.
YES
My heart is broken for seeing our community being dismantled like this. I wish that things hadn't devolved this way. But I am hopeful for change - in our Country - but also in our CF community. I've been here as an athlete since 2007, then an affiliate owner since 2013. We've done so much good for so long! Dave I'm putting my trust in you sir. Please step up and help put us on a path to heal and move forward again. I love you guys and I love this community too much to quit now. We've got our work cut out for us - but we can do this if we'll just try.
Well said Nate.
I’m just looking for the words I’m sorry anywhere in here
So ... you didn't read it then? Several apologies throughout the letter.
Under the 4th section “We Publish the Truth”, last sentence of 3rd paragraph.
A lot of "we" but no "I". I think that is the point.
Although the Tweeted apology used "I", it was issued by the CrossFit corporate account not Glassman's personal account - which has still not taken down the original tweet.
As a result, and also taking into account what he said on a Zoom call earlier last week, I don't think he is sorry.
Lol same. Didn't see it.
GG thoughts and comments are his and his alone, for which he is responsible and accountable for. He doesn’t represent me, my box, or the CrossFit community as a whole. Many wonderful people have poured their life savings into their box and provide income and employment to thousands of individuals. To hurt these innocent people based on the thoughtless actions of GG should be considered.
Word. BTW what did GG say? From here it looks like he attacked IHME a wholly owned subsidiary of Gates Fdtn and hardly the beacon of light helping the black community. Black Lives Matter clearly requires helping the black community to turn back and eliminate diseases crushing all and expecially the black community. Has Gates and IHME done that at all? So clearly IHME warrants the attack by GG and CF. And it sure looks like GG and CF are being attacked for doing the right thing and blamed for the wrong thing. Does this mean that CF is going to do more and make Black Lives Matter by vaccinating, chipping and contact tracing out of every box on the planet?
Zdb CrossFit- Did you by chance read how he belittled 10 year affiliate owner Alyssa? Or maybe read the transcript of the Zoom call between he and several other affiliate owners where he openly expressed that he was not mourning George Floyd's death?
I have been a Crossfit "athlete" since 2012 and yes it has transformed me. What always impressed me was how the community came together for various causes. Be it "Hero's for hope" or the countless Hero WODs done to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is from that perspective that the silence and the Floyd-19 comment seem so completely anti what I have known for the past 8 years. During the pandemic I built myself a very nice home gym and am using programming from a coach I know. I am unsure as to whether I will go back to a box in the future. It is a shame. Crossfit seems to have jumped the shark.
It sure has if the Floyd-19 comment is all that it took for CF to defend someone like IHME and their affiliation with Gates Fdtn and attack GG. Is that the only crime GG is accused of?
Honestly, as a minority I have experienced discrimination at not just one but two boxes after 3 years of CrossFit. So I said fuck this and put together my own home gym and I am faster and stronger now than when I was working out at an affiliate. I have been doing my own programing. And this is after suffering from post-partum depression for two years. Long story short, I will never throw my money into a box again.
Why are we still protecting this guy, GG didn't just "make a mistake" the things he said, the conspiracy laden nonsense, the flippant way in which he talked about George Floyd, and the tone he used when discussing POC are clearly indicative of a racially ignorant bigot; the more CrossFit tries to protect him the more it proves that they have learned nothing, care nothing for diversity, and only want to protect their bottom line. I love CrossFit but I can't stand for this half apologize aimed at protecting GG, it's that protectionist attitude that allows bigotry to survive amongst white people in America.
Yes! Exactly right!
Is there a link to those comments?
💯💯💯💯💯
Let us 'speak' the CrossFit way: I like the idea of a benchmark workout in the memory of George Floyd. I think we could include 'getting up from the ground' as a movement in the Floyd workout, like burpees, devil's presses or manmakers. I'd say burpees to pullups. And a 19 minutes total time cap.
It’s like noah ohlsen Said in a comment to his decission to boycot the games: action says more then Words.
I believe CrossFit incl, including GG, has shown a lot of actions wich shows that CrossFit (community) Is for everybody, regardless the background, Colour, believes or whatever.
just look to the last games, where athletes from the smallest countries were invited and had the Chance to work-out with/against the fittest athletes. Even if you are woman and want to wear a hijab.
every box I walked in, I have never experienced even a sence of racism of any kind.
that Having said: I do not understand why GG said the things he have said.
but I truly hope everybody can see that CrossFit is more than GG, that we and what we like to do, is more than GG.
what I see, is that there are two choices everyone can make Now:
1: you stay in anger. Distancing yourself from the CrossFit community, not willing to forgive and looking for revenge, one way or another.
2: you forgive, not forget. After the Many explanations And apologies from GG and CF HQ, you trust them in their sincere intentions. Even if their words are not enough to you.
you forgive either GG or CF HQ, stay within the community and you do And whatever you can And want to do, to Make This community better than you believe it is right now.
I am sorry for GG that he is done this way. Despite the Words he said and the anger he caused, we as community. As people of any kind, pursuing health and fitness, we thank a lot to him.
yet I hope And believe, that this CrossFit community will become stronger And better Out of this Situation. And YOU can be a part of that improvemen.
Word. Thank you. Greg's and all CF actions speak louder than any words including those on this page. Does anyone have any criticism of Greg's or any box's actions along these lines? BTW, it might help for those of us more shadowbanned and censored to get a link to judge for ourselves what we are condemning Greg for.
That stunt was a money grab. Sure he invited them but IMMEDIATELY cut them after the first event after they'd already done so much work to fundraise from their much smaller countries. They don't have the luxury of major sponsors like say Fraser or Toomey. They were just used for optics.
When Greg Glassman spoke strong and forward against the corruption in the Heath care system or against soda makers we were all behind him. He makes one wrong comment and we want to tear him apart. I love CrossFit and hopefully it will continue and be better with Castro
Do you really think this is about one wrong comment? How long have you owned an affiliate? CrossFit’s message is simply powerful. The methodology is beyond solid, and the community is magical. However, over the years, Greg’s presentation and delivery of the message, has created a significant barrier to affiliate’s ability to deliver that message. I am nowhere alone in describing our efforts to share the magic of CrossFit with our local communities, as being a constant uphill battle. Small businesses have enough challenges as it is. His last comment just added yet another layer to that barrier. Greg Glassman needs to learn to leave his own ego at the door.
@ Charles Allen. I always thought that what we saw of Greg's ego was his acknowledgement of the targets he put on his own back by taking on the people he did. Do you know anyone who did more to crush the lies bringing diabetes and other diseases down on us all and the worst on the black community? Do you think Greg did not understand how much easier his life would have been to just keep rocking along with phenomenal training without calling out the largest most powerful most corrupt industries and people on the planet?
There is still so much anger everywhere ☹️ I think this was a very good letter from HQ, and I believe it's a good step to move forward through all that's happened lately. I think that we will get through this and continue to get better everyday, together.
Best of luck to Dave and the rest of HQ.
Great work guys ... Crossfit will get through this for sure. The community is strong... Greg has done more for fitness and health awareness than any medic we will ever come across - let’s not forget that ... His posts about chronic disease will have helped millions of people over the years - of all races ... And I hope he’ll return to Crossfit some day... Although he has left it with the right person... Dave will be awesome !!! 👍👍👍

John 8:7
are you implying there is no reason, need or purpose for anyone to hold accountable the founder of the biggest worldwide fitness company for stating racist remarks? Simply because we all sin?
A man should not be crucified for making a mistake. And as a human who has made many- I will not cast a stone.
He has been held accountable, which is why he has retired. A man that feels the level of passion he does for his purpose would not give up his status so quickly. But in his desire to reach the most people possible with the organization he created, he realized he was standing in the way of that progress because of a mistake he made. Out of care for the community and society as a whole- he let go so that people would focus more on the good CrossFit is doing and not on the words of one man from one point in time.
No. My point is that yes, he is the founder of CrossFit and he was its CEO, but he is also a person. People make mistakes and there is no doubt that some of the things Glassman said were stupid and insensitive, but I doubt that they were intended to be racist and he should at least be given the benefit of the doubt. Instead, many people obviously choose to construe it in the worst possible way and brand him a racist. Bam. No trial. Instant verdict and punishment and no appeal. My question: how many of you people who are oh so eager to brand Glassman a racist and tear him to shreds in public have never ever said something stupid, insensitive or even - dare I say it - racist? Maybe you should consider that before throwing the next verbal rock. People make mistakes. Even CEO’s.
I’m hopeful that many will decide to stay. In particular,
those of color. I hope those of color choose to stay to stand strong and defy the
underlying goal of those with racial tendencies, and that’s to have their
perfect little white world. If those of color leave, the racists win.
And I also feel that as a community, we have stepped up to
the plate in unity to help stand beside our brothers and sisters of color
against a man who viciously attacked and alienated so many, and stood up to the
Company that remained silent too long, and demanded changes be made.
Has enough been done? That’s to be seen. But the community is
here. To splinter off into separate directions, looking for a new compass to
guide us, weakens us as a whole. Together the community of Crossfit is strong,
and we can change more lives and more beliefs by bringing together even more brothers,
sisters, moms, and dads of color.
I say we change Crossfit from within. Why start over when we
have created an incredible and powerful foundation?
It is not enough to ask the black community to stay to create change from within. You are implying that you want them to teach us how to be anti racist. We must educate ourselves to move forward.
Amen Nicholas To!
The statement is verbose and rambles. It obscures any coherent message that should have been clear. What's clear to me is that the leadership still doesn't get it. Shouldn't be hard, lengthy or convoluted to say: Black Lives Matter, we are sorry for such insensitive comments surrounding the killing of George Floyd, and we are taking steps to educate ourselves, ensure a climate of diversity throughout the CrossFit enterprise, and eradicate any element of racism and discrimination. That's it. Rambling about you were silent and it took so long because you were trying to perfect a response is ludacris. Not convincing to the people who are affected.
You claim that you are anti-racist - how do you justify this? Based on the statement, I think there is a level of racism that remains and you are either in denial or really don't care about tackling it. This is really what needs to be the focus of your corporate transformation. If you are really honest and sincere about fixing this problem then you will address the racism and diversity issues that were apparent well before this national upheaval. Just looking at the demographics and the landscape of the people that make up the CrossFit enterprise and leadership, it's readily apparent there is a serious problem. It really grabbed my attention when I first looked up the individuals that make up the Hero WODs - white males. That says it all.
I joined CrossFit just 2 years ago. I enjoy it so much that it has become my livelihood. But I am deeply disturbed that the underlying CrossFit culture is similar to NASCAR where diversity it clearly avoided and casually accepted. It really pains me that I may have to disengage from the passion I have for CrossFit because the brand, culture, and people are not what I can associate with due to the problems I described. My hope and prayer is that you truly pause and take an honest look at yourself to identify who you really are and then take real measures to transform the environment that everyone can love and enjoy without reservations.
If you haven't figured it out yet, I am a black male and this is how I feel. There is no malice is what I expressed, I just want to see real change. God's speed!
Agree 100% - This is painful to watch. What gg said was not just insensitive it was racist. To continue to communicate without taking full responsibility for where the community is and the lack of diversity or even the balls to communicate about it accurately is really just sad. And it shows there are not POC sitting at the table to make decisions with how to care for and create more opportunities for POC to be affected positively by the CrossFit community. This must change imo if the community so many love is going flourish.
Excellent post. This wasn’t an apology. It was an equivocation - an attempt to say you understand without doing any listening whatsoever. An embarrassment. You don’t get to comment on or about the black community. You have no history of engagement, activism, or meaningful efforts at understanding and exploring issues of diversity and racism.
It is 2020. It is time we stop making excuses for people that should be leading. It’s time we go find people that will. You couldn’t even say black lives matter. Because it is obvious that Crossfit doesn’t believe that.
I am a white male, and I stand with you and what you wrote, Clyde. I have always been creeped out by the all-white lineup in the Hero WODs and what that said about CF's culture but I shrugged it off because I loved the workouts. *That* is white privilege in action, and I promise to do better.
My box said that it was ending its affiliation with CF, and I applauded the decision. Now, it seems to be waffling, and if it returns to the CF fold, I will find a new box. In fact, I'm not sure whether I will stay even if it ultimately chooses to do the right thing. I don't want to be part of any organization for which the decision to be anti-racist and to stand in unequivocal solidarity with the Black community is "complicated." Those who say that they want to leave politics out of the gym are those with the privilege not to see that politics are already in the gym, and everywhere else.
Dang everyone, look how cool and progressive Adam is! Can you tell us all more about how you are threatening to leave your box? I really care a lot about your decisions and I really think you’ll make a huge impact in the black communities telling us here! Dang man, you even get creeped out doing workouts in honor of men and women who died for your freedom because of the color of their skin!! Man, you’re so woke, how can I be more like you???
If you want to make fun of me for being "woke," be my guest. Whatever. But I do want to clarify one thing: I did not mean that I was creeped out doing workouts in honor of fallen heroes. I've found it quite moving, and they deserve to be remembered and honored with respect and gratitude. I was creeped out that there seemed to be few, if any, Black faces among that lineup of heroes.
If you want to leave the CF community then leave. No ones forcing you to be apart of anything. That’s the beauty of America. But I promise you, no one cares about your opinion and your virtue signaling except you. Whatever makes you feel good though, Adam!
Just to share the info, Hero workouts are based on submissions - they'll only be as diverse as what individuals & affiliates submit
There is always time to correct our way, Crossfit changed my life, i will always love you Crossfit.
15 years I’ve listened, watched and shared every word from Coach. He’s fought the good fight and advanced public health more than any hospital, doctor or agency anywhere. He spent his own money to fight for us affiliates against anyone who bore false witness.
He took on big sugar, big pharma, big sorta-science and the health care industry. He’s been right...a lot.
this tweet was wrong and poorly timed but I’m not bailing on what we’ve all spent our careers building. Let’s come through this stronger and more unified than ever. I appreciate all you’ve done for us Coach, including stepping down.
Right on! I agree. I’ve been a CF’er for 11 years now and won’t bail because of one mistake. It was a poorly written tweet and that’s it. If folks bail because of that, were they ever really in?
The tweet wasn’t just wrong, poorly timed or poorly written. It was racist. Coming from the mouth of the man that is CrossFit and no one wants to admit it was racist or take responsibility. It’s the same bs that perpetuates racism in our country and will continue to until it is actually confronted in an Anti-racist way.
Reebok stops his partnership with CrossFit : but their T-shirts, shorts, etc. will still be manufactured in Vietnam, soo all the Metcon shoes we all wear. Please, Reebok, CrossFit, stop claiming yours "values". My values, the human commun values we all share, are embedded in my life, practiced every day as much as possible, and not activited by passing by the Box's door. What's the next step ? Should we sing "Heal the world" at the beggening or at the end of the WODs ? Thank you Greg Glassman for all.
I think this is what the CrossFit community needed to hear! I have one issue. It seems you have turned your back on the police officers who make up a huge part of boxes around the country. Just like Greg’s comments doesn’t mean everyone at CrossFit HQ is bad, the same goes to the police officers who are good and protect us everyday. I know a lot of officers who are true to CrossFit, but feel betrayed.
Hi Joseph, you are right. Unfortunately we live at a time when only the wrong behaviour gets noticed. I am a great believer that 99% of the world's population just wants to live a peaceful life, raise a family, serve community, start a business and many other wonderful ventures. But there is always that 1% that creates a bad image for whatever your demographic, nation, religion or culture is. It is a human weakness, but I also believe the human race does continue to move forward and evolve. Just sometimes it feels like one step forward and two steps back.
First I don't think Greg is racist. I can't tell what's in a man's soul only he can. Did he say several inappropriate and racist comments, yeah I think so. Are all the police bad, no. It's not about bad cops or good cops It's more systemic. America is racist, and the police and yes, even CrossFit are a part of that whether outright or beneath the surface. Until we all begin to recognize that nothing will change.
This letter shows the true side of CrossFit. To me, it isn’t what is said in victory that shows your character as much as what is said in defeat. I take this as a sincere apology and I can appreciate, accept, and offer forgiveness on the matter. As a Christian, I stand forgiven for my sins, if I don’t forgive others, I am a hypocrite to my core and never had love or forgiveness in my heart. I love you CrossFit people all people from every race. Let us be strong together and be the calm in this crazy storm and build each other up, let’s take this as a time for learning and growing together. I know it’s probably hard for others to see it, but I respect CrossFit HQ for not making a statement in haste as you can clearly see what happens when you do. It’s easier to take your time and get it right the first time than to go back and fix what is broken. Train hard and love one another!
Ignore the haters. People are understandably very angry, but it's getting a bit misplaced I think. You guys wrote a brave and honest response to a difficult situation and are doing the best you can. Is it perfect? No, but let's stop wishing for perfection and be happy that genuine and heartfelt work is being attempted. I appreciated that it was clear you all poured your heart into that response.
👍
The resignation of Gregg Glassman is a good first start, but we have a long way to go to heal our community...
1. CrossFit needs to be fully transparent about Greg’s role, what exactly does stepping down mean? Does he still profit? Does he still have majority control in the company?
2. Enact immediate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training for all HQ leadership and staff.
3. Add a DEI component to all CrossFit coach/trainer certification courses.
4. Hire an outside equity audit firm to create a baseline of HQ diversity, equity and inclusion status.
5. Create a DEI strategic plan with measurable goals, including support for local boxes to recruit, retain, and create more inclusive spaces for ALL members, recognizing CrossFit does not always reflect the
communities it serves in terms of demographics.
6. Be transparent about this process, where HQ is at, and where it’s headed.
This is an example of actions HQ can take to demonstrate an acknowledgement that things are not where they need to be, and a public commitment to this work would do much to heal the community.
Bravo Kristopher!
It's a shame Gregs email response to Elyssa ended up in the public domain and it's a shame the CEO has gotten that upset that he chose the tone he did when responding. Things were obviously not ideal in Greg's world that he flew off the handle like that but we don't know the whole story.
With respect to the tweet; to use GFs name was not particularly wise at this time. Donald Trump did it recently and people were like WTF?
Did I think it was racist? Not at all.
In summary Greg made a mistake in responding the way he did to a loyal customer of crossfit and he made an error on Twitter. If I was an affiliate right now I would probably pull my affiliation but that would be a business and financial decision in the short term whilst Crossfit HQ regroup and addresses what way to take the community forward. I believe affiliates and the movement of crossfit will be more powerful together than as thousands of individuals.
Is Greg a villain ? Not in my eyes. He just made a mistake or two and has chosen to retire.
Finally he created something we all once loved. Something for us to rally around which has included as many people as possible on a journey to wellness and more.
I can't slate the guy for making mistakes. We are human after all.
Agree with you 100%. As an affiliate owner do I think he racist, no. Did he make multiple inappropriate and questionable comments and statements, absolutely. Unfortunately, all this has tarnished the brand regardless of what each individual thinks. Google CrossFit now and these headlines will be attached to the brand name for years. Is this the best way to attract new members, no. Greg was and is a genius for creating this global brand, but words make a difference, and this has been a total PR disaster. Significant changes need to be made and made fast if they have any chance of turning this around.
In further response to Lance Lowery, I don’t know where you got your evidence, Mr. Floyd was not a criminal and the store owner stated that he may well not have known the $20 bill was counterfeit! Also, it comes out that there was an existing hatred of Floyd by the cop who killed him! That said, the police enforce the law, they don’t prosecute! You state that you don’t condone what happened to Floyd? Sure you do! It sounds like from your letter that you’re the kind of person who believes the cops are always right. More whites are killed by police than blacks? Now that’s a gem!
Sorry I just saw this, their comment section here is a little dif than Im used to.
Here, since your to damned lazy to do a simple search, I did it for you.
George Floyd’s criminal record includes 5 convictions related to theft, possession, and trade of coke. Floyd was arrested five times in 20 years, his last cocaine arrest dates back in 2005.
George was also linked to two convictions in the 1990s for possession and theft of a controlled substance (cocaine). However, it is not clear whether or not Floyd served his time in prison for this felony.
George was accused of a firearm robbery in August 1998 for which he served 10 months at Harris County Jail. In April 2002, Floyd was condemned to 30 days of prison for trespassing private property.
George Floyd was involved in two more cocaine offenses, in October 2002 and in 2004, for which he did eight-months and ten-months sentence in prison respectively.
Another cocaine possession conviction in Dec 2005, Floyd was arrested for having cocaine on him and served 10 months in state jail.
After a few months, Floyd’s charge was upgraded, amending the cocaine amount he possessed to be about 4 grams.
However, according to the records, the alleged charge was lifted because Floyd convinced the jury that he had less than 1 gram of cocaine.
That may be, but what does it matter, I haven't said I am fine with what the officer did, I actually said I am not okay with it, but because your are so judgmental, I need to prove to you, but I don't, it's not okay. I have only said there is no evidence the officer did it because of the color of his skin, I would say its more because he was a 6'6" criminal high on meth resisting going in to the squad car. BUT if he has a bunch of racist fb posts, its safe to say he may have done it because hes black. And He shouldnt have been judge jury and executioner, I don't actually know a single person that hasn't agreed with that aspect of this.
You are such an idiot, I literally said "granted I'm not okay with the excessive force or loss of life in this situation" and this was the point of my post, everyone implies they know what someone means, yet I say one thing and some how I'm supposed to prove to you that I'm being honest? Again because I don't agree with you, I am an evil lying racist disgusting(your words) person. When in reality, you sir are a hateful P.O.S
Again because you are too lazy to search for things yourself and are destined to be ignorant for the rest of your life....
According to the WaPo police shooting’s database, 116 people have been shot and killed by law enforcement so far in 2019. Fifteen of those incidents involved African-Americans, while 12 were Latino and 26 were white. The other cases were simply listed as “other” or “unknown.”
The full report is behind a paywall at wapo and im not giving them a dime. but on another site, that has a graphic so I cant paste it, or dont know how if i can, but I will just type in the numbers.

Keith, debating with you will be easy, stop repeating things you hear or verify what you hear, because you are a follower, and a parrot, you are not a critical thinking leader that is curious about everything said. I will gladly look at things you want me to to verify your points. But if your just flinging mud, you aren't going to win this one. Not that you will anyways because you are all emotion, and not fact

We believe in CrossFit
This is not an apology. These are excuses. Essentially your answer is “Glassman isn’t a bad guy, he’s just passionate” when clearly, the backlash of the community should prove to you outright that his comments are racist. Excusing it with any understanding only aligns yourself to the fact you do not practice anti-racism. You’ll see here that most of those willing to just quickly forgive are privileged enough to avoid racism in every day life and every social situation they exist in. Anti-racism is action not explanation. You need to come up with actions that show you are committed to intersectionality, learning from your mistakes, and repairing the damage done. Giving money to groups supporting BLM would be a start. Pay an anti-racism consultant to give you an honest audit of your practices and help you move forward with an action plan because you probably don’t have the expertise to do this yourselves based on your response here. Respondents here are mentioning their own boxes as if that is the same as what they should feel about HQ. As far as what individual boxes do with this information will be for themselves to decide and Crossfit HQ should lead the way. Citing examples of Southern gyms with more Black members is simply a way out of this discussion— Crossfit is majority white owned and attended, and there are good introspective reasons to look into that. Thinking there is no racism at your gym is a good way to prove that there is, it just doesn’t affect you. Racism isn’t politics. It’s life for many people.
Wow sounds like at least 2 reasonably actionable items in these posts so far:
- Perform some kind of outreach to the community we've insulted and dismissed
- Perform an internal audit using a 3rd party
Hopefully someone at HQ will take them up.
I could not agree with this more wholeheartedly.
73% of the American population is white, 13% is black. Why is it racist that more boxes are owned by white people?
It seems like you're saying white people have to prove they're not racist by paying money to anti-racism groups... that seems very racist to me. Do you really think white people don't experience racism? This whole narrative that white people are racist until they prove they aren't is just racism you feel is justified. Someone definitely needs some introspection. We as humans are a collection of individuals, but here you are throwing everyone into groups and deciding what they need to based on the group you put them in.
You’re right I don’t believe in reverse racism. As a white person I may experience individual acts of prejudice. Not the same.
Also, “not racist” is not the goal, nor is it attainable. As Professor Kendi expertly says, we must be actively anti racist. We hold racist beliefs because of systemic racism. It’s the way the world is right now but it’s not hopeless. It only changes as we hold ourselves accountable.
This is from a few years ago but kind of shows us where we were leading. https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/09/15/222574436/whos-really-left-out-of-the-crossfit-circle
86% of Crossfitters identify as White and 50% earn over 150k a year.
This is all a joke, I don't find anything he said racist at all.... So if you mention a black mans name in a tweet, that the most sensitive generation of snowflakes finds offensive, everyone has to bail and jump ship? Does it matter if he intends something to be racist or not? Who decides something is racist? All of you white people? LOL!!! So who is more racist? The person that sees all the racism? Or the one who doesn't see any of it? The way I see things, if you don't notice racism, it's because you are colorblind, you aren't seeking out every little thing to show outrage over... to prove that you aren't racist, because you see it, it must be a sad life to look at everything that way.... Its pathetic, we are all individuals, we don't choose what color we are, we choose what to do with our life, our skin color doesn't dictate what we do. In this country, we ALL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO MAKE OUR OWN CHOICES. George Floyd decided to be a criminal, granted I'm not okay with the excessive force or loss of life in this situation, but Floyd wouldn't have even been in this situation had he chosen to not be a criminal.... And who here is able to read minds and know that the officer was doing what he was doing because Floyd was black? Maybe its because he was a criminal? I mean its not like we have all held a gun to a pregnant ladies belly to rob her, but what do I know? Sounds like a stand up guy to me!!! He just occasionally likes to do a little meth and cocaine. Lets make him a role model!!!
The owner of my box said Glassman's comments were "toxic, hurtful and undefendable." Really? Floyd - 19 you can get all of that from Floyd - 19? Its as if all of you pansies see it as N****R-19.
Oh and by the way, more white people are killed by police than black people. So seems like the systemic racism is towards white people. White privilege seems more like white guilt, Vellner and Fikowski are working on that for us all, lets see what they come up with pondering how privileged they are to work their asses off.
Typical Trump Kool-aid drinker! Call people names who disagree with your idiotic worldview! I’m a 73 year old white man who’s had Allie can stomach! When I watched the life being drained from George Floyd, I broke down and cried! It offended my sense of humanity! If that makes me a “snowflake” so be it! People like you are disgusting, along with your views! If you can read a statement that says that this country’s problem isn’t COVID 19 but rather FLOYD 19 and not see racism is mind-bending! For those out there who do not see racism as a major problem in America, need only read your nauseating post! No systemic racism in America’s police departments? People like you see only what they choose to see! All one needs to do is compare the widespread violence directed at BLM protesters the last week or so, with the glad handing, hand-shaking response to the heavily armed right wing thugs protesting the lockdown a few weeks ago to see it! You’re not only on the wrong side of history, sir, you’re on the wrong side of morality!! Shame on you, and the rest of all you angry white men who see yourselves as the victims here!
Did you read anything I wrote? It looks like you are here to be political, and not talk about what Greg Glassman said. I'm going to parse this the best I can.
Oh the irony, Typical Trump Kool-Aid drinker(I would call that, calling someone a name), and my idiotic worldview, what do you know about my worldview?
73 yo white man, see what I mean, I am colorblind, I don't give a damn what color you are, but you feel the need to tell me because race is everything to you.
You cried, okay, your sensitive and I am glad your proud that you cried, I actually haven't watched it, I don't need to to know what happened. I didn't mention anything about what happened to George Floyd so much as this is about Glassman's comments, but since your a judgmental idiot, I will clarify, by me saying sensitive snow flakes, which you definitely are but not for the reason you think, I am referring to everyone being so outraged over a simple comment, this guy built crossfit, and he needs to retire because he says something you don't like, or get butt hurt over, you cant just say well that was stupid and go about your business, you need to try and destroy his life because you are pathetic and can't handle someone saying something you find offensive.
When did he say the country's problem isn't covid 19 its floyd 19? He was implying that this organisation was the reason we shut the country down because they said 2 million people would die, and now the same organization is going to tackle racism? If they were off by a factor of x 22 why the hell would you want them to handle racism if they were so wrong? That is what he was implying by Floyd-19, his clarification even said so? It must be hard living life being so stupid
Your post is nauseating as well, but I don't mind having a conversation. What was the most racist thing I said? Or is it because I don't agree with you it makes me a racist? And have you read your hate filled post? I only pose questions, and you respond with disgust, my entire post is about Glassman's comments, and how I don't find Floyd-19 to be racist in the context it was meant, have you read his clarifying comment?
Systemic racism in police departments? You are so stupid you don't even know how stupid you are, it's an amazing thing. How can there be systemic racism in police departments if all races are police officers? Is every race of officer out to kill other races, and they get along at the station?
Who is directing violence at BLM? You mean antifa? That's a liberal group buddy, I don't know what heavily armed right wing thugs you are referring to, but how many people were killed during that? Vs the 17 from your peaceful protest? Oh and looting done, building burned, police stations over run? That's all liberals buddy. Oh and by the way, why does this always happen in Democrat cities? I guess the leaders there are just as incompetent as you are?
I'm on the wrong side? You should read you post, Mr morality. LOL @ the angry white men comment, what the hell are you?!? LOL, I'm not even angry, I just think your an idiot, and wrong on so many levels, and I disagree with you on probably quite a few things, but I think you are free to have any opinion you like, and it doesn't bother me one bit, but I disagree with you. You are free to call me as many things and attempt to assassinate my character since that is all you can do is say I'm this and that, and such a horrible person and make me the bad guy so you feel better, when in reality I asked a lot of questions, and you didn't respond to any of them. I never said I was a victim of anything, you have that mentality, I do not, I believe we are all individuals, that make our own individual choices, and I accepted a long time ago that I am responsible for 100% of what happens in my life and don't blame anyone else but myself for anything that happens in my life. I take 100% responsibility. I was implying that Pat Velner mentioned he was discussing how privileged he was with Fikowski, if they are so privileged, why do they act so guilty? Is the color of their skin what made them make it to the top of this sport? No, it was effort, and it always seems the people that want to blame others for things in their lives is because they don't want to put in the work because its easier to just point their finger and cry like little babies....
In summary, this was fun, I hope you actually read, and maybe reply to some of my earlier questions, and instead of letting an emotional tantrum write you reply, why don't you think. I am going to call you names, but it's fine because I don't care if you call me names, which I'm still cracking up at your opening line, how you call me a name and then say I call people names that don't share my idiotic worldview!!! Its so ironic that you don't see how easily it can be reversed. Simple minds. I would say you still have a lot of growing up to do as a 73 yo, I'm looking forward to your reply!!!
Crossfit HQ, I stand behind you. Racism has 0 place in any establishment. I have seen MANY black individuals in crossfit so the argument that it is too high a price or crossfit as a sport is racist is invalid. I am a student nurse, working full time, school full time, and have consequently had to take a break from crossfit. Does it suck, absolutely! But my funds just aren't there and I accept that. However, I am not mad for the price of crossfit. My first degree is exercise physiology, and I know all the pain and struggle it takes to create new and inventive ways of creating workouts and everything that the affiliate gyms provide to customers. When you pay for crossfit it isn't just for a WOD. You are paying for coach salaries, affiliate fees, electricity, cleaning supplies, building rent or mortgage, taxes, certifications, equipment, a complete mindless fitness experience where all you have to do is show up, bust ass and so much more. The fact is that crossfit costs more than say LA fitness because the process is way more involved than just "here is all the equipment you want, go have fun." I stand behind crossfit and DO NOT condone what Greg Glassman said, however he does not speak for all of us. Categorizing a population or culture based on one persons words is wrong. Everyone is so quick to jump all over each other now a days instead of taking a breathe and shaking something off. I agree with the decision to depart from Glassman, I am a bit scared of Castro (lol), but I know that the sport will continue on. Everyone has made mistakes, stupid remarks, and idiotic choices. EVERYONE HAS!!! Not everyone needs to be crucified for every little thing. That being said, if you are gonna make a dumb remark for some reason, twitter is definitely not the place for it. The culture of the world is changing and that means opinions and view points will be revealed more and more with people. Crossfit for me has never been political or anything remotely close to something I base my life views off of. I have gained that through my own life experiences, how I was raised, and my interactions with everyone in the world.
All in all, I stand behind crossfit still. I will be rejoining the crossfit gym scene as quickly as I get that pay increase in nursing. I love all of the actual members of crossfit who fight during workouts together to finish, and who are sprawled out on the floor when its all said and done. Stay strong together and keep lifting forever everyone!
The price of CrossFit which typically ranges higher than a normal gym but less than a personal trainer is totally valid In today’s market and not up for debate.
Acknowledging African Americans have disproportionately less wealth than whites is not racist. Ignoring this fact and turning a blind eye is. CrossFit Corporate has accumulated enough wealth to help reach those it couldn’t otherwise reach - so why not at least do this on a small scale.
Im glad you’ve met a lot of black CrossFitters - I know a few but this has not been my personal experience that they’ve ever made up a large population.
A CrossFit box is not a place for politics. since I began crossfit in 2008, at the age of 54, I have known certain things about Glassman. when Castro stepped into the fray, I knew things about him as well. if you think that one is better than the other or less racist than the other, you may conclude that the replacement/cure is worse than the disease. Frankly, I see the change as lip service to assuage the community and stem the mass exodus of affiliates. it's all about money, not about needing to apologize or reassessing your views.
There is nothing wrong with supporting BLM and there is nothing wrong with supporting the police. what is wrong is spouting your opinions at the Box or in an interview about CrossFit. sometimes we all need to learn to keep our mouth shut in certain places. CrossFit is one of them.
I’ve been Crossfitting for over seven years now - most of that while on the road. I’ve been to boxes around the country including the Deep South with major black populations. I think I can count on one hand the number of black members I’ve met. This is the reality of CrossFit in the field - it’s expensive and it’s teachings reserved for mostly white people with enough disposable income to afford it. Yes the postings are free - but this is an ignorant retort as you assume that the people who need it the most even have internet access.
Here’s a good response that would go a longer way than an apology. How about a few corporate owned gyms in predominantly black neighborhoods that offer memberships at significantly reduced rates with childcare so that struggling parents of color can get educated on the issues that CrossFit cares about, not to mention healthier so they can take care of their children and pass the message on to them. Maybe even offer a shower and a clean meal at the end. I went to school with a lot of folks who relied on school meals to eat anything.
So it's a CrossFit's job to feed the poor and correct problems in our nation? This is in no way shape or form the responsibility of a gym owner. It costs money to run a business, and people start businesses with the intention of making a profit. It would take someone extremely rich with money to blow with a strong philanthropist leaning to pull this off.
I think you're coming from a good place, but this is just silly. The idea that attempting to make money off a business is racism is a bit much. How about this. Work hard, save up a bunch of money, then go open an expensive business in a poor area of town and lose money every month.
I do CrossFit at home, for free. It costs me nothing.
Hi Scott,
Congratulations on having enough money for internet, gym equipment, and food. This is not reality for a lot of America.
CrossFit is a profitable business. It can afford to seed money to a NFP charitable organization - something like “The CrossFit Foundation” and gain support from other organizations for donations. Profit is not the idea here. Carving out a percentage of profits that are also tax deductible is realistic. Corporate donations to foundations are commonplace.
Doing nothing is not the answer.
Michael,
Actually besides gym equipment, it is a reality for a lot of america. You don't know a single person with out internet, or that is starving.
I like how you volunteer their money they earned for them, how about this, you make your own money, and do what you like with it, and they can make theirs and do what they like with it? Because to me it sounds like you want someone else to do what you want them to do, so you don't have to do it. How much of a % do you carve out of your budget?
What are you doing? Talking?
Oh, and I meant to mention, why do you think they would want to do crossfit? You know a lot of people like to play sports, cf may not be their thing, don't just assume there aren't black people that do cf because of the cost because, well, that's racist... to assume they can't afford it and all.
I don't condone racism or rubbing salt in this country's open wounds. I can tell you that anyone who tried to bring that bullshit into our box would get shutdown immediately.
That being said, I don't want my gym being a political soap box. I don't understand why every business and organization is feeling the need to put out a press release on their views. They're invariable the same and a boilerplate statement does little to convince anyone that you're inclusive-- just jumping on the bandwagon for your own gain.
For the record, I never looked to Glassman or Crossfit (or their affiliates) for political guidance, I looked to them for fitness and nutritional guidance.
Exactly my thoughts as well. Racism is not tolerated by me. I was raised that way and I run my business the same. Like you I don’t use my gym as a platform for social or political opinions. Fitness and nothing more. Unfortunately acting this way backfired on me this week and I have several members now assuming I’m racist for not speaking out. It’s weighing very heavy on me and this is hardest week I have ever had in my professional life.
This is a terrible apology. An apology is worth something when your words are followed by action. So what are you going to do differently? Instead of saying we failed to speak up at the right time and we haven't made inclusive measures a priority, tell us how you're going to do things differently moving forward. Until you make an acknowledgement of action in a different direction, your words are just an empty "sorry." Although you're asking us to measure Greg thoroughly, you're not measuring yourselves thoroughly. You think a statement of words of saying you support the black community is enough. HOW do you support the black community? Where are you acknowledging the black voices and bodies that are within the sport? HOW will you do better in the future? What are your plans to not make this mistake again? Take responsibility by telling us HOW you will educate yourselves to be more inclusive, what training will you offer your staff at HQ? We know you're a fitness company and we know you and your staff do not agree with everything together, however where will you make improvements to ensure something so divisive as racism doesn't appear as merely a "statement" and actually embody the community of fitness enthusiasts? You have work to do outside of your words. It's time to train your moral compass just as passionately as you train your physical.
Disappointed once again, what will you do to show us that you are inclusive ? With all the wealth we have helped Glassman create, how are you helping the low income folks in our society? Do you have plans to open gyms in non privileged suburban areas where these young folks can maybe get away from crime and devote their time to this form of sport? What have you done for our Communities?
Dear CrossFit HQ,
Obviously, many of us are angry with Glassman’s tweet but more importantly we are angered by your silence before and after Glassman’s tweet. Your apology is a step in the right direction but there is still work to be done. A vast number of your athletes, affiliates, coaches are alienated from an organization that they loved. I myself am struggling to reconcile my feelings about CrossFit. I am level 2 coach and have been coaching for seven years and I have been very vocal to my box owner about dropping the affiliate. As I mentioned, the letter of apology is a start but you also failed to address Glassman’s email to Rocket CrossFit. That email delivered the message that CrossFit HQ does not care about their affiliates. CrossFit HQ has done nothing for its affiliates when they have needed HQ the most. Covid-19 has been devastating for many boxes around the world and CrossFit HQ has done next to nothing to support them and then Glassman responds to Rocket’s email with that terrible email. Please tell me how you will make that better moving forward.
sincerely,
Ryan K
You're a CrossFit Trainer, how are you not as responsible as they are? Answer: Neither of you is responsible for Glassman, he's an individual. This collectivism, burn it all to the grown, cancel culture is nonsense.
Take me for instance. Been a software engineer for a long time. My manager is an old racist, homophobic sack of shit. It's the highest paying job I've ever had in my life. Am I supposed to quit? Throw away all my success for the words of a moron I don't give a crap about? Are all the non-white people on my team who are well aware of it racist as well? That sounds like letting the racists win in a way.. if we all quit. Nope, not going to do it.
I'll make my money, I'll feed my children, and continue going about being the best person I can be.
So yea, let me know how you, who aren't Glassman, are going to make it better? By trying to make your owner who busted his ass to pay for the affiliation drop it? You're a jerk, just because you're upset doesn't make you right.
CrossFit HQ “...not sure how to get the message right.”
Really?
You over complicated it.
Really?
What’s so hard and complicated about merely saying— Black Lives Matter.
Apparently, CrossFit HQ was so twisted by indifference if not all-out disdain that it couldn’t get out 3 short words.
This is a terrible response. But don't take my word for it. Here's an analysis:
The 10 mistakes in CrossFit’s “apology” for the racial insensitivity of CEO Greg Glassman
I have spoken out passionately about what has taken place. As a person of colour I felt it absolutely necessary to stand up....for Coach Glassman. Your response only solidifies what I believe his true intentions were - to call BS on a system and institute (IHME) that needs to be held accountable for what was described in a joint study by Sydney University, North Western University and Texas University as a ‘poorly predicted’ projection model for COVID-19. In other words flawed, outrageously overpredicted. The same model lauded on social and mainstream media, by the White House and also used to inform Policy decisions at the highest level. Decisions that destabilized economies, made millions jobless overnight, shutdown businesses, quarantined healthy people, scared others away from hospitals and caused so many to take their own lives. Now that same system and institute wants to tackle racism? Really!! I’m angry just thinking about it. Greg was to. Are we that quick to forget that this is the same man that called BS on National Strength and Conditioning Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as their partners at The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo/Gatorade, The Kellen Company, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services? I’m going to end on these words - that are not mine but reflect what I know to be true about Coach Glassman and CrossFit : “ CrossFit is passionate about many things, but high on that list is telling the truth even when it is difficult, unpopular, and/or upsetting.” (Excerpt taken from CrossFit Battles: A Timeline comments section). Mauri Ora! (Good health).
You are the first person I have seen make this kind of statement, thank you!! How can so many miss this point? SMH
Well said. The problem with this weird witch hunt mentality is that you can always find something to be offended by. It will never end. Nothing will ever be good enough. No one is safe. People eating people alive to justify some weird ideal where we all never get offended. We can't say anything meaningful without justifying it a thousand times. We just want CFHQ to apologize. Now we just want CFHQ to recognize black athletes. Now we just want CFHQ to make Glassman homeless. Now we just want CFHQ to erase his name from every article he's written. Heaven forbid people find a picture of new CEO dave castro rocking corn rows. What did he mean by that???? Dave should apologize. Dave should sell his ranch. Dave should resign as Games Director. Very strange times.
Thank you for saying this!
Your words is what Mr. Glassman was trying to convey (poorly, I must add) in his response to the IHME.
The problem is most people can't think logically or rationally. A demoralized man cannot see the truth even when you prove it to his face.
Richard Kahotea....
While I believe there may be some truth to this. Can you explain why then that email response to Rocket CrossFit? Why state what he did about not mourning George Floyd (how could say that after watching the video and if his only intention was to stick it to the IHME why the need to repeat that statement several times on the call with Black owners and in addition to that speaking on behalf of the staff at HQ and saying they don't mourn either)...
Then after all of that he still goes ahead and makes that tweet!
So at best him and HQ just didn't really care enough(perhaps biased and blinded by their close ties to and friendship with law enforcement)... They kept silent (thought about the issues as long as they deemed necessary) then decided to break silence in such an insensitive and callous way.
There were so many opportunities to step back and take a different tone before the ship started to sink and they choose to hold their position.
What was so hard about saying nobody deserves to die like George Floyd did and Black people like everybody else deserve to be treated justly, equally and fairly and they are committed to that cause.
Because he has so many police friends he was unable to speak the truth about many police even with clear and irrefutable video evidence. 'Or he believes it's excusable for Black people to be brutalized by the police. He said..'I don't mourn George Floyd...' He repeated this more than one to his black owners... What Non-Racist, unbiased, fair, human being could say that after watching that video and in light of the countless other questionable fatal interactions of black people with law enforcement.
I'm asking, you tell me, because I don't know.
In their apology they highlight that they pride themselves on truth telling... is it that they are not interested in THE truth when it comes to race but just their version of the truth, just what they want to see...it seems as if that is what has been revealed.
Attention: Paul Alexander.
Hi Paul,
I'm thankful you've done the ONE thing we all need to do right now - question WHY? Below is another comment I made on social - it will give a bit of detail that address some of your points. But there are a few more questions you might want to think about and research: Why are black leaders and activists saying they will not Martyr George Floyd? Who is the real enemy here? Why is there social pressure to take sides? Me telling you what I know robs you of the journey that can teach you so much more. But as you requested, here's a snippet:
Derek Chauvin should go to jail. If not worse. He killed George Floyd. Murdered even. All four officers involved are responsible. It's a tragedy. But here's a question: Who really was George? When you find out the truth about what he DID vs Greg Glassman and what he DID it boggles the mind that one should be seen as a martyr and the other vilified. Let me be clear - George Floyd did not deserve to die the way he did. That is 100% fact.
But here's another fact. George Floyd held a gun to a pregnant women's belly during a home invasion. Let that sink in. A gun to the belly of an unborn child along with a string of other offences. He was no angel. Now let's look at Gregg’s rap sheet. Apart from being a hard-ass and making some unpopular decisions and using poorly timed words - he's now the bad guy? Once more - what happened to George Floyd was tragic and Derek Chauvin and his fellow officers need to be held accountable. But should Gregg Glassman be lambasted and vilified as he has been? He's not the one who held a gun to a pregnant women's unborn child.
Mainstream media was quick to glorify his community work but failed to reveal this important fact - both autopsies revealed he had elevated levels of methamphetamines in his body at the time of his arrest. The store clerk called the police not only because of the suspected fake note but because of his irrational behaviour. It wasn't a race thing. There is so much more to discover around this issue that mainstream media fail to highlight. Stats (USA) on police shootings of Black vs White. Discrepancies in Murder % Black vs White. The numbers aren't what you think. And they don't lie. They actually debunk the narrative around the rallies in the US. Final word. As a man who has been humiliated, demeaned and falsely accused because of the colour of my skin and my cultural background I understand the pain of what the world witnessed when Derek Chauvin took the life of George Floyd. May he rest in peace.
Dave Castro needs to speak directly to the CrossFit Community. A letter from HQ is nice, but what we've been lacking is LEADERSHIP, we need a leader with humility who SPEAKS OPENLY AND DIRECTLY TO US ON A REGULAR BASIS and LISTENS to us. It doesn't have to be perfect. Castro probably has a bit to learn in this role, but I believe he is a good person and has good intentions for all of us, and that will come through. Bottom line, he will need to get out there and talk to us.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re not gonna find that in Castro.

Honestly, I think you missed the mark here. Glassman retiring is not recompense for his callous remarks. He likely won't miss a beat financially and isn't divested in CrossFit as either a brand or an influencer. He simply retired, no harm, no foul, no problem.
Glassman's retiring is not the rebuke of his obvious thoughts and ideas expressed during this trying time in our history. Calling them "callous" is not a rebuke.
"He relentlessly attacks those who dilute or deny essential truths." This statement, to me, destroys any other good will the rest of your statement had sought to create. It seems to say that Glassman was expressing a response to the dilution or denial of an essential truth and rather than state clearly that he was wrong you stated that he was just insensitive and hurtful.
Therefore, it appears that you agree with his message, just not the way it was offered. That, CrossFit, is why your statement goes nowhere near far enough to find the peace you say you want, the healing you believe we all need. It also stinks of the type of corporate nonsense that got us where we are now in society, with you only acquiescing to the response because it hurts your bottom line, not because you take issue with injustices or support those seeking change.
And your bottom line, well, I think you know where that trend is heading. I think you've realized that the power of wellness does not reside in your brand, or your message, or your business model. It resides in people. It resides in people who are able to pay your exorbitant fees (which makes CrossFit prohibitive in many parts of our human community). It resides in athletes who display the type of character and commitment all success demands. It belongs to people who are seeking a better way of living, and who demand more of themselves than CrossFit seems to demand of itself.
In closing, I'd like to say to Glassman, "Welcome to retirement. You've worked hard to have the retirement you will now enjoy even if you haven't developed the empathy to understand your privilege in that process." To Castro I'd like to say, "Welcome to the shit storm you've helped create." To the notable athletes we all follow and who inspire us daily I'd like to say, "Thank you! Your character, your passion and your response is what we need more of in this world. We don't need CrossFit, you've shown that, we need you. Do not give in just because CrossFit decided to say in half-measures that they were "insensitive" and "imperfect". Continue on with the truth you know is right, and we will continue to follow you, enjoy the inspiration and badassery you provide that not once depended on CrossFit for distribution. Thank you for being all we could have asked for."
Thank you for your great message. How Dave have handle Patrick V just shows what kind of leader he is I think
CrossFit is free, they post a workout every day with instructions on how to do it. All of the methodology Greg came up with is posted online for free.
There is no apology that will appease you, and there shouldn't be (words are just words), it must be the actions of CrossFit that will speak to their character.
Very well said
Jason, there is an apology that will appease me so I'm not sure why you would suggest otherwise. However, it needs to be a REAL apology and not one made simply to stem the tide of disaffiliation. Saying "I'm sorry" isn't an apology unless it is follow up with ACTION. Real action.
It seems that you are the target of CrossFit's "apology", someone willing to take anything offered as an excuse to move beyond an issue without really changing a damned thing.
What did CrossFit do? What action was taken? Well Glassman retired, but he still owns CrossFit. It's really a token move that has no real impact. Then they made Dave Castro CEO, a move that allows Glassman a lot of influence even if his name isn't on the order. Castro also has a history of being absent on the diversity issue, and has (at least once) been asked about diversity in CrossFit to which he ignored the inquiry.
There is no real "apology" here from CrossFit. It is apparent that ignorance of social issues is prevalent in the leadership at CrossFit, and that no amount of pressure will change that. Hopefully there will be a new entity involved, one that takes the functional fitness model and incorporates affordability, social responsibility and tolerance into it.
As for being free? Fitness, functional or otherwise, can always be free. However, CrossFit is nowhere near free.
This statement of apology is a painfully tortured word salad. If an organization is composed of people with a "diversity of opinions" and one of those opinions is that the systemic oppression of Black people that is baked into our society either doesn't exist or isn't a problem, that organization is racist.
An organization that is so riven with internal strife that it can't get it together to post a single sentence about the brutal murder of an unarmed Black man by a policeman is dysfunctional. And an organization that doesn't feel it necessary to post a statement of solidarity with the Black community after an event that shocked the conscience of a nation and the world is racist.
I, too, am grateful to CrossFit and to Glassman's vision of fitness and health. It has made a big difference in my life. But, for all his brilliance, he has revealed himself as a racist, a bully, and an overall conspiracy-mongering nut job. He has always been "iconoclastic" and "edgy" to an often uncomfortable degree but now he has crossed a line. Yes, Glassman, like everyone, deserves a chance to reflect and grow and try to make things right. But he doesn't deserve to be supported by my money or to enjoy my support. That's why I'm glad that my box has ended its affiliation with CF HQ and removed CrossFit from its name. It's also why I will be retiring my collection of CF t-shirts--why would I want to announce that I stood with an organization that will forever, and justly, be equated with racism, insensivity, and a smirking attitude toward a grievous, 400-year-old injustice and the pain of its fellow citizens?
I saw a post here, in which someone wrote that he goes to the gym "to get away from this stuff." That is white privilege in action. I've always been uncomfortable that my box, in the country's largest and most liberal city, has so few Black and Latino members. But I've always just figured, Well, that's just the way it is. That, too, is white privilege. I don't know the answers but I do know that it is my responsibility to keep asking the questions and to keep pushing the businesses and institutions around me--including my box--to do better.
By the way, here are Glassman's own words from a Zoom meeting with affiliate owners:
“We’re not mourning for George Floyd. I don’t think me or any of my staff are. Can you tell me why I should mourn for him? Other than it’s the ‘white’ thing to do. I get that pressure but give me another reason.”
It's disgusting.
Please read this and wake up, people. 🙏🙏🙏

NUFF SAID!!!! Thanks Olga
It started with an email and silence not with the tweet, you are missing the whole point
Dear CrossFit,
You changed my life for the better. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sitting at home and came across a Dan Bailey video. I saw him tackle on a simple workout and as I saw this massive athlete attack the workout and come out drenched in sweat (and slobber), I said to myself, "I want to do this". One video went into the next and I came across the CrossFit Games. My life has never been the same ever since. I lost so much weight, gained so much muscle, strength, technique, knowledge over my body and became a Level 1 Coach for CrossFit. Couldn't be prouder of this title.
I appreciate your last paragraph about this is late, long and imperfect. You're right, I think you knew this going in but for the sake of putting SOMETHING out there regarding all this you did it anyway. You knew there would be a flood of comments that would spark from this post, just like you knew there would be a flurry of outrage when a video was posted about beef and broccoli yesterday (Granted it looked absolutely delicious). I'd like to think the difference between posting that video and posting this message was the mindset of opening the floor for discussion, for you all up in HQ to take a moment to read through the positive and negative comments, accepting that this is where the decisions you all as a company has led to.
Right now, we don't need to hear about how CrossFit helps fight diabetes and chronic diseases. We know this very well, it's why we drove to the seminars, why we spent hours perfecting our form and technique to pass on to our members and why we fight anybody online that tries to badmouth CrossFit. We have CrossFit in our blood, soul and mind. It's all we think about, it's become our lives (explain why else I would have 6 different pair of shoes specifically for CrossFit). We don't need to continue seeing statements on twitter or the homepage regarding this matter. We need to see action. We want to see an apology shown to the gym formerly known as Rocket CrossFit. We want an apology issued to all those affiliate owners sitting in on the zoom meeting that is now public knowledge. We want, maybe not right now because I can understand where as a company, you all need to sit down and discuss the matters brought up. Such as Black Lives Matter, such as the boxes and athletes that have expressed their disappointed and decision to not go to the Games. Can you speak freely as a company without Greg Glassman as the CEO when questions arise, without having to defend his name because he created CrossFit?
I think maybe people are very much upset and curious to see where Glassman still resides in the company, if he's still profiting from all this in the long run. I think from a business standpoint, I think it's impossible to realistically expect him not to get some kind of payout even as he's stepped down as CEO. CEO's that have been let go or retired, stepped down, always earn something out of the split, that's just business 101. Where is his influence in matters moving forward? Is it Dave calling the shots? Because it shouldn't be. We need a board of directors that represent the affiliates to make sure such a thing doesn't happen again. We need a system of check and balances that holds even the major players accountable. You hold athletes accountable for using sport enhancement drugs to such an extent, are you holding your employees in the same regard?
Thousands of gyms are no longer affiliated with CrossFit and it's us who have the voice to be heard. Are you listening? Are you willing to set new changes? Let us know, the people who are affected, don't worry about a dip in the earnings, don't worry about a dip in PR, worry about the community that stood by you all for years.
My life will now never be the same, but I hope because as for the first time you changed my life, you can change it for the better yet again. Not just for myself but for the entire community that holds such a high regard toward you because of the bond we've established through CrossFit. I wish Dave Castro the best, I wish to see great things come forth from all of this. I wish CrossFit HQ the best, and hope to see Nicole Carroll back in the position she was in. I hope to see all these gyms CONTINUE with their new names but for us to be able to say, "We do CrossFit here". Because the spirit of CrossFit has never left our hearts.
I wish you all the best. I hope one day I can sit in on a zoom call or face Castro face to face in complete awe from his leadership and express that to my gym. You all do a great job of providing these amazing workouts that leave us in shambles, on the floor gasping for air, sweat all over and dripping onto the floor. I suggest you all yourselves go through such an extreme with rebuilding this company to what we know it truly can be.
Spot on Raul.
Well said, Raul. Thank you for putting into words what so so many of us are feeling right now.
Nailed it.
If I remember correctly, Glassman owns CrossFit, it's not incorporated in any way. Stepping down as CEO theoretically removes him from operations, but he still owns and profits from the company. For Glassman to truly be separated from CrossFit it would require him to sell the company.
The worlds problems will not be solved through social media! People often forget that!
I think saying "we rarely speak on these issues" just reinforces the fact that the leadership and top staff at HQ don't think these are actually issues. You didn't want time to get it right...you thought it wasn't your problem to address and now you're trying to come across as sincere just to placate those who are holding your feet to the fire. This statement leads me to believe your media team is NOT diverse because your implicit bias is on full display. If there's people on the media/communications team that didn't think a statement was necessary, they need to go with Glassman.
Thank you for issuing your thoughts, apologies, and self awareness during this difficult time. But now it is the time for action. You have made a change at CEO. Great first step. Now make it worth the change, and set up Dave and the leadership team for success by using these crucial first 90 days of his leadership to take meaningful actions.
Put plans and initiatives in place to drive diversity and inclusion within the sport. Take part in supporting organizations, such as Black Lives Matter, who are fighting racial injustice. And take actions to reconcile with and to support the gyms and athletes whom you have hurt and embarrassed by these comments and events. You have the money and you have the platform for change, now be accountable and use it, and don't hesitate the next time these opportunities arise to truly drive positive change in our communities as well as drive love and support of one another.
Black lives significantly matter, and it's time we all as a Crossfit family begin to use our strengths of mind, body, and spirit to support initiatives for positive change and racial equality within our communities.
Well written and right to the point. Love this =]
A lot of people are saying, "it was a mistake, they apologized, move on".
But it was not a mistake, right? Greg said what he believes, and he still believes it today. He believes Floyd was killed because he was part of a money counterfeiting ring which the cop is also part of. The cop knew who he was and killed him on purpose. This is what Greg believes. I don't believe Greg is racist, but he's certainly wrong.
He passionately believes things with no evidence at all behind them. And the things that he believes hurt people.
The reason why it took CrossFit so long to put out a statement was not just "we didn't know the perfect thing to say". It was that many in CrossFit believe no statement is at all required. Many in CrossFit believe what Greg said is true.
So come on. Speak truth! Own up to what you believe in. Better to say, "We as an organization value every member, no matter their skin color. We've never once discriminated against anybody. We have nothing to work on as a company. Systemic racism doesn't exist in society. Our founder is a rapid conspiracy theorist."
Speak the truth. Stop with these repetitive words that mean nothing and don't say what you actually believe.
I agree. Gregg has spent millions to defend Crossfit and he is highly educated and definitely not a racist. His choice of words may have offended some but I saw the message he was trying to get across and it had nothing to do with racism. I don't see anyone calling Candice Owens a black woman a racist when she states that she does not support Greorge Floyd. Or Sheldon Steele when he speaks of the Pathos in the black community. Crossfit is supposed to be a family, this is one of the things I love about our community. To attack a family member because they make a mistake or I disagree with them is shamefully disloyal and ungrateful. I think we all miss the mark when we focus on Black Lives Matter. Either we all matter on none of us matters. Constantly setting myself apart by color, race, religious belief, sexual orientation or any other difference only creates more division and alienation. I live in the deep south and have NEVER experienced one bit of racism in my box or in any other box I have visited EVER. I think we would do better to stick together and look at our real enemies out there. The ones who want to keep people sick and stop us from offering nutritional advise and create false studies that state Crossfit hurts people. These are the ones who threaten us as a nation and us individually and our businesses . Remember the saying Divide and Conquer.
Thank you, I will never forget the kindness and generosity CrossFit has and continues to show us as affiliate owners. And I will never forget the fundamental change for the better that Greg’s insights have brought to our lives.
Yeah, I'm sure he is super sorry. Take a listen to the audio in this article.
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryancbrooks/crossfit-ceo-founder-zoom-greg-glassman-george-floyd
Interesting Buzzfeed article. They indicate that it is a "conspiracy theory" that the COVID-19 virus escaped from a Wuhan Chinese lab. Pretty good evidence it did. GG said burning down businesses in Black neighborhoods by so called "protesters" was bad. Pretty good evidence it is bad. He said most police are good. Pretty good evidence that is true too. Is he not sensitive enough for everyone? Absolutely, however, if you are going to take Buzzfeed for your "news" that is your right, but don't expect everyone to follow your wokeness.
"We would not seek a battle as we are, and as we are, we say we will not shun it." - Henry V
As all CrossFitters know, none of us is good at everything. CF has been and continues to be one of the most important influences in my life. You have never run from a fight, but not every fight can be won with the skills you have; you have to "go back to school," as a coach of mine used to say, then come back to fight again. What you have created is bigger than all of us. It will survive this episode, grow and continue to thrive. It will not and should not be torn down by a momentary indiscretion. Though Greg's comments were hurtful, Greg is a man and he can learn and grow as we all must. Naturally, you will get a lot of flack for your statement, and maybe some appreciation as well. I for one will take the statement for what it is: a start. Nobody gets "woke" in a flash of brilliance; it's a long road for most of us. I wish Greg the best in retirement, and Dave good luck on the tough road ahead. We all have the right to own up to our mistakes, make amends if we can and move on. Many of our brothers and sisters are hurting more than us. Maybe now we can heal each other and move forward together.
Well said.
I go to the gym to escape this kind of thing. They never needed to comment and be a part of this great divide that is being created. I love Crossfit and what it has done for my health and stability.
Thank you to everyone at CrossFit for giving me the tools to make healthy, positive change in my life. I am physically fit and making progress and learning true ,in perspective, factual knowledge because of CrossFit. The fact that you have made this apology although you are not a political company/organization shows your sincerity and for the people who feel it’s not good enough I have to say too bad for them. Being worried about a company speaking out/not speaking out about a cause is immature and reflects their character and personality. It is every citizen’s responsibility to stand up against injustice and fight for what is right. That being said corporations do not have the same responsibilities as private citizens and when a company does take a stance about an issue it shows integrity . Police brutality and racism are very real issues in America today and we need to focus on finding a solution rather than getting upset about a business not speaking up as quickly as we would have liked. This country needs unity to right the wrongs and negative criticism will only hinder. I am a patriot and I love this country. We need unity, not critical attitudes. Thank you CrossFit
Well said.
When most people walk into a box for the first time, they can't snatch well. At all. But rather than throw them out and tell them to never come back again, we support them. We coach them. We help them to become better.
We know people can improve because we have seen it ourselves. It's because we have gotten better ourselves.
CrossFit needs to be better to properly steward the community that has developed throughout the world.
Part of being better is that Greg Glassman needs to sell his controlling interest in CrossFit to someone who can be a good steward of the community. The last time Greg stepped down as CEO, it lasted for less than a year. With everything that has come to light over the last week, it is clear that Greg's views differ greatly from the majority of the community.
So, to allow CrossFit to move forward and heal, Greg needs to go.
After that happens, CrossFit has work to do to heal the damage that has been done to the brand. But I believe that CrossFit can do so much good in the world that we need to give CrossFit a chance to improve.
WE need to make CrossFit better. WE need to be a part of the solution and not just burn everything down.
Keep politics, propaganda and ideology away from CrossFit, let focus on fitness, health and wellness. Diversity its not just by skin color, race, religion, gender...it's also the way you think and stand in the community.
This statement was half-hearted, rambling, and poorly conceived.
You must make better efforts to communicate. Rehire some if your social media staff, your professional communicators, if you hope/wish to save the brand. It was almost a stream of consciousness rant.
There is a tough road ahead, be smart plan and strategize before you communicate.
I follow Crossfit because there are occasional items of interest, not because I am an active crossfit member. This letter is the first I’ve heard of the controversy. It is the exact opposite of the image that crossfit has so carefully cultivated. It is whiny, obsequious, non-science-based, ineffective, .... Following at least one Crossfit tenant, it is repetitive. If this is all you can come up with, at this late date, after so many great examples of what could be done, diminishes both the leadership and the rest of the organization. ManUp, take responsibility, make effective real change, and put your names behind your intent.
It makes me sad that all these people are ready to fight with each other when it comes to racism, which is bad and should not exist in the modern world but they look the other way (most of them), when it comes to fighting against sugar or processed food consumption which kill a lot more people in today's world. We should show the same solidarity against all those evils, not just pick one a go to the extreme depths.
I really want Crossfit to survive this and grow bigger and stronger in providing people health and fitness which is inclusive for all people.
Think before react but really think thorough before you say or type anything, protect what is important. Crossfit is important.
Hope Dave can accomplish that.
You’re comparing the fight against racism to sugar and processed foods? This is delusional. Open your eyes. Black people have to leave their home every day in fear. If you think that is an over exaggeration then read a book or talk to a black friend about their experiences.
Well, all I'm saying is all lives matter. So we should approach all the things that threaten human life the same. Crossfit does that and no other organization does it better.
Apology accepted. Lets move on and continue to help the thousands of people to improve their lives.
You're good with that?
Apology accepted. 🙌
This statement was written by the same person who wrote GG retirement letter AND Dave Castro's acceptance letter.
This is a step in the right direction. I whole-heartedly accept your apology.
This is the time where you need need to step up your game. Ask what your community needs.
I would love to SEE the new Crossfit HQ. I need to see a face to Crossfit HQ...
Also, it didn’t have to take so long for you to respond. EVERY ONE who’s done the L1 cert knows that crossfit is a fitness program that is “broad, general and INCLUSIVE.“
Add to that the love and support for law-enforcement, first responders, military personnel, etc. AND end with condemning the use of excessive force.
that would have been a great post... and video...
With Glassman out, who is the “we” who put this statement out to the public?
The CrossFit HQ team I think is what they mean. It would make sense.
HQ team. Guess it includes even part of the Staff Seminar (L3/L4 Coaches)
We all have been under pressure since covid19 broke out. We all make mistake. If we took good from this organization why cant we help them to correct and move on. Its hasn't been good for all we all are under pressure one way or another lets forgive and move on
I love crossfit. I am very sad that my gym decided to not be a crossfit gym any longer because of this. I actually go to crossfit to get away from the cares of the world for an hour.
I am a retired police officer and i happen to agree with Greg, although admittedly his style is not politically correct. Like the rest of the nation, I was quick to condemn the officers involved in Mr Floyd's death. However, after the autopsy results I changed my mind. I realize Ive been in the exact same situation. I think it's completely different seeing it with a cops eyes. I truly don't think it was a racial issue, it had more to do with Mr Floyds rap sheet. This would have been his 6th felony, (some of his crimes were truly heinous), and the narcotics and methamphetamine (and COVID-19) he had in his system at the same time which would make him act strange to say the least not to mention that is a deadly combination. I think that the illegal drugs combined with his comorbidities are more likely what killed him.
I think we are sending the wrong message to children. I believe the message should be:
1 don't commit felonies
2 illegal drugs are dangerous and can kill you.
3. Stay home if you have COVID-19.
But these days it seems one can't have a opposing view.
I agree with agree with your 3 learning points. Life is a lesson of many things. I am not going to throw Crossfit under the bus because one person made a mistake, tried to apologize, resigned from a position he loved. Forgiveness is part of our healing process and I respect the apology and will move forward with no bitter words.
This big black man with drugs in his system And felony history was so scary that while squeezing his neck with a knee, the cop had his hands in his pockets....I just cannot .... I won’t address anything else about this tone deaf comment except just FYI many people with covid are asymptomatic.... that was what is called an incidental finding on his autopsy. #justsaying
Sorry but I disagree. Floyd was killed because of a Police Officer kneeling on him for around 9 minutes. Was Floyd a hero? I don't think so. Was he a good person? Probably not. He made mistakes in his past and he was trying to get redemption and start a new life.
He deserved to be killed by a Police Officer? Absolutely not. Period.
You do realize that anybody on here can see your name and that you are a retired Police officer, don't you? I obtained your personal data and work history after a 45-second internet search and will file a Police Report against you with the Los Angeles Police Department this morning.
You have publicly admitted in writing to murder. If I were you I would turn yourself in to the nearest law enforcement official. But then again you still think pigs should be able to get away with it. They didn't teach you at the Police Academy that your voluntary confession waives your right to invoke the Fifth Amendment ? There's another lesson here for you:
1) Don't murder
Is it really true that convicted cops are 69 times more likely to be killed by fellow inmates? With a rap sheet like yours I would be very very afraid. You are disgusting (and a moron).
Murderers should be executed. Good luck.
Dear
Michael,
I am truly
shocked by your words and the ignorance of the facts they reveal.
What does it have to do with rap sheets, earlier felonys or covid-19 if someone says „I
can´t breathe“ with a Police Office sitting on his neck, preventing his ability
to breath until he dies?! And by the way, I haven´t seen the Police Officers
pulling out George Floyds rap sheet and double checking it, how many felonys he
has committed or drug testing him or testing him on COVID-19. And even if they
had done it, it still wouldn´t have been up to them, to (mis-)treat him like
his.
And to follow your assumption - just as an experiment of thought – that it wasn´t a racial
issue, then for me the only conclusion left is, that it was an act of hate
against humanity done by persons with so little self-confidence and so much hate
in them, which have been led by a feeling of power and superiority. And in this
case, all of the Police Officers were and are in the wrong position. Being a
Police Office with an attitude like this, doesn´t honor a job, a task where you
should serve justice.
Maybe you can think about why so many people react in the
way they do and maybe you can critically think about your own point of view and
do not withdraw yourself from the dialogue and discussion that is going on out there,
by saying „ … it seems one can´t have a opposing view“ these days.
I hope you can, it could enrich your life.
All the best!
Michael,
Regardless of whether he has a rap sheet , or what he has done, he was murdered by three policemen and an ex-policeman. It's interesting that your 1,2,3 bullet points do not mention anything at all to do with BLM, police brutality and an unfair society. It's precisely this kind of view which was covered in Rocket's letter - you're staying silent. If anything, you are blaming Floyd for his own death, and saying nothing about the four policemen that actually are responsible for his death,
Anyone can have an opposing view, but I think it's frustrating for our american brothers and sisters, who are repeatedly up in arms at the failure of the likes of yourself to recognize the wrongs that have taken place, and are unable to see the broken society we live in.
I agree with a number of your points.
The cop also had a very beautiful report history. He was an angel wasn't he? Are you feeling ok? You love Crossfit ? You think by having the word Crossfit taken out that your rower will stop counting calories? Or your bumper plates will stop working?
It's OK to murder a man who is clearly defenseless? Regardless of the actions, what is the cops protocol? To MURDER THEM? or let them go through the judicial system ? I don't even know what happen. I know the cop was not right for KILLING HIM.
You need some light in your life . You're lost.
The words posted are not sufficient to correct the wrong that was done. It is sad when those in positions of leadership speak, which is to be considered from the heart and soul of how the author thinks, and then use words that are insensitive. Too many times leaders have to try and back track and say, I didn't mean it, it was misinterpreted, I'm sorry...etc. Forgiveness is most definitely something a community can offer but when cut by insensitive words and then presented with statements aligned to, "I hope we are now saying the right thing?" Its a shame.
A "He" (Glassman) made an insensitive statement and then a whole bunch of "We's" got together and tried to state the right thing. The He spoke from what his heart and soul evidently believe-His true colors were revealed. I am a strong believer of the Crossfit community and His (Glassman) heart and soul can not, will not and does not represent me. I forgive Him and ask others to do the same. What you posted is a reaction to an insensitive comment. I ask Crossfit to pause, be silent for a minute, ask the community what it needs, and then listen. To listen is action. Lead your community.

It’s not a mistake - it’s a real problem at the top in HQ that needs to be addressed or CrossFit will die. Today, I am ashamed to be associated with CrossFit after 7 years and 3 boxes in 3 cities. No new members will touch a CrossFit box as long as the brand refuses to fix this problem.
Take these steps to PLEASE save our community:
- Announce a Board of Directors and true governance which represents a diverse community and holds the leadership team accountable
- Glassman divests his controlling stake (see Clippers). If he does it soon, I’m sure he’ll make money.
- CrossFit implements an action plan to identify and address diversity and inclusion
- Public statement supporting Black Lives Matter
- Put your mission where your mouth is: become a b-Corp or non profit focused on public health. You can still grow the sport with for profit partnerships.
Greg’s actions and words in private speak louder than ‘ I made a mistake.’ I don’t see any evidence that racial equity is important to CrossFit, despite it being a major source of obesity in America. Greg’s own ‘apology’ and retirement reflect that — he still owns the majority of this company’s shares.
If you set the mission of CrossFit to be public health without at least making, you need to take public strides to Racial justice. That means supporting Black Lives Matter. CrossFit is expensive. CrossFit’s hero’s are predominantly white. There is nothing tangible for us to believe that the current corporate governance and capital ownership will support real change.
I understand CrossFit may feel loyalty to police, fire and military within the community, but you can’t ignore the cancer killing black men and women. I’ll be grateful for the day when I shouldn’t need to choose my loyalty to racial justice or the police, but if forced to choose I choose human rights and justice.
+1 to becoming a B-Corp, while also open-sourcing your IP and brand.
I don't know a single coach who can be a CrossFit coach full-time, and support themselves. Not. One. You guys make millions. Why are so many so quickly un-affiliating because of one (albeit, monumental) mistake?
You guys fleece small family businesses with your affiliate fees, and your branding. The "science" stuff is almost culty. Just support the core community, dammit. Want to do nutrition research, beyond that? Great, apply for a grant.
I've spent months convincing friends and family I did not join a cult, when I began CrossFit. You guys are acting more and more culty though, and framing Greg's exit as "retirement" in the face of it all, is honestly insulting. Do good, by acting good. Not greedy.

Nailed it!
Thank you Crossfit HQ and Greg, we know all the good work you do all around the world. Crossfit is Community we shall not be divided especially now. We were seeking a response .. waiting and nothing came it broke us, we needed to reply to our members our community and the best answer at that time needed to be to deaffiliate, because we do not accept insensitive or racist remark when what we all stand for is inclusion and all walks of life. We are human and not perfect, we accept your apology and we forgive you! We are excited to re-open our doors June 15th 2020 proudly as Crossfit Del Mar Founder in 2010! God Bless you and God Bless is all 🙏
I literally posted saying good luck to Castro and it got deleted. Can we calm down? Not everyone is the enemy, guy.
Thank you for apologizing. This was the one section of my life that had stability and community and unwavering acceptance. The one part that wasn't divided. And Here it is. The media making a mockery of it all. Again. Pulling. Twisting. Labeling. Was the comment racist? Na. I am a ptsd champ and handle stress with humor. Was it insensitive and stupid. Yes. For that.... I forgive you whole heartedly. I think you are an amazing company that is imperfect just like any other company. Because.... you know...... imperfect humans run it. And any decision you make or don't make, say or don't say, will always have praises and judges. Someone will agree and someone will disagree. I didn't see anything wrong with this statement and view it as authentic. (Only God knows the truth) but please keep your head held high. You brought communities together and they are more fit because of it. Thanks for being authentically you and "acting" purposefully rather than just reacting to the feelings around you. You guys rock And im super sad my box stepped away from the crossfit label. God bless and good luck crossfit.
You make the workout, not a word
Im a new box owner and was wondering... What are the benefits of being an affiliate?
Dear, why do you become box owner if you does not answered this question for yourself?
From my point of vision as regular CrossFit athlete:
- Your box will be part of specific brand. People who looking for CrossFit in most cases will choose from affiliated gyms. If you are not affiliated you can not use term "CrossFit" in you box name, your advertisements and you classes. I mean you can, but it's illegal. Even if your classes is nearly identical to CrossFit program, new customers will not able find your gym in internet.
- Customers looking for affiliated gyms, since they hope they are confidential in CrossFit. I know this is not always the truth, but and customers have no other criteria to rely on. Between to boxes - affiliated and not it's much more easy to choose affiliated, since it should have at last one certified CrossFit coach. We all know - CF Level 1 cert does not mean anything special, but for new customers it is not clear.
- CrossFit Games and The Open it big part of CrossFit boxes live and is fun and united event. If you box is not affiliated, many of your advanced members will face minor problems in attempt to log official results. They need to either record video for each workout (does you gym has time space to allow every one to record yourself during workout?) or perform workouts in affiliated gym, or ask affiliated gym to log results (which is not legal, i think, but i faced this case in real life)
- Not only new customers may be lost. Advanced CrossFit athletes looking for gyms with specific equipment. Who the will find your gym if box has no CrossFit in it's name? You may name it Functional training box, or CrossTraining box, or whatever you want, but what says to your people? What the functional and what is cross? TRX is functional too, but this is not we looking for. You will tire to explain to the people you are the same as CrossFit.
- When i am in travel, i looking for CrossFit gym and it's better to be affiliated, since if it's not, i start to think they have no money to pay affiliation fee, thats mean the have no money to purchase all range of equipments and machines, and coaches level may be very low.
But, i understand why you ask. In my country affiliated gym should pay as much as in US (in terms of currency value it's become more dramatic), but CrossFit HQ does nothing to advertise CrossFit in return. Many gyms has no chance to full in classes and pay for the rent, but should pay affiliation fee every year. Compare to McDonald's franchise there are clear difference. McDonald's advertisement is everywhere and it's headed from McDonald's HQ. Every one know about McDonald's and it should be same fo CrossFit. As customer i am looking for this, because more people will be involved in CrossFit, more boxes will be opened, lower membership price will be available.
Some counterpoints, to the above, to consider - With respect..
- The value of the brand has been very publicly diminished.
- This was true before this very public incident. Even people outside of the CrossFit world are aware of what's going on right now. Due to the "mob mentality" gyms that *stay* affiliated run the risk of being avoided.
- Open registration, if I'm not mistaken, has been down significantly. The Games has lost the majority of its backing and Rogue has linked up with Reebok. The Open may well be a thing of the past.
- Advanced athletes (people who are already in the community) will already know where to look. This is still a legitimate point, though. Boxes that drop affiliation will have to be artful in their branding.
- I'm the same way, but again, considering how public this has been, that's going to change for a lot of people.
I'm interested to see if they make any changes to the CF-L3 coaching hours requirement being "in an affiliate". If not, a lot of very talented coaches will go ahead and get personal training certifications to check that block.
Greg doesn't need to apologize for anything! His comment was NOT racist!!!!!!!! This whole debacle is an EMBARRASSMENT to mankind. STOP THE RACE BAITING! Greg is CROSSFIT! Thank you Greg!
It was. He is.
The whole debacle is an embarrassment indeed ....not in the way you’re thinking though ...
CROSSFIT! it's a word. A WOD still works without it.
Yes it is racist. Very.
Greg is certainly not CrossFit. Have you met him? Did he teach you how to do a wallball?
Let's take the word racist out of the equation. Greg Glassman denies racism exists. It's not for me to say that denying that there is racism in the US today is racist....
BUT... the founder believes in imaginary things. Conspiracy theories. Things with no basis in actual fact. Things that only exist in his imagination have the effect of hurting people. It reflects badly on him.
The problem is not necessarily that he said these things, and that they were recorded. But that he believes in imaginary things. That's the problem. And CrossFit has refused so far to address this as the problem.
Greg was CrossFit To those of us outside of the CrossFit community the see a whole different picture. Google CrossFit now and see what comes up. Greg Glassman, racist comments. Whether you like it or not and what you think of GG, that's what the public is now seeing. The more the brand continues to associate in anyway with him at this point, the longer will have that image attached to the brand. I have no idea whether he's racist or not. I've never met the guy. But this is what the public's image of the brand now is and that's what we need to address and resolve as fast as possible. I've been closed the last 3 months, and this is the last thing I needed. This has been a complete PR disaster, and us affiliate owners are now feeling its impact.

I think this is a step on the right direction. However, I think there was not a clear answer to the reason for Greg’s actions (apart from being biased or racist). What tangible actions is Crossfit, as a company, and as a brand going to take against racism?
When you say that there are internal disagreements in CF HQ’s what do you mean? Do you disagree about being or not being anti-racist? There are issues in which an opinion is just factually wrong and you should, as a company, aim to speak up to them.
I believe Crossfit is much more than a company and I’m so thankful for it. I think Greg should be better (and him resigning after all that has happened is a good start) as well as the company. I’m glad that my local community is inclusive. But as HQ of a company you have power and you have the responsibility not only to take a stance, but to be proactive in it.
Crossfit is about discomfort and progress, it should also be in its position about inequality.
Perhaps the organization was discussing how to express their distaste and intolerance for racism without specifically endorsing the BLM movement. I know that people are very confused these days, but these are two completely separate issues. Similarly, a person or organization can be appalled, angered and disgusted by the horrific killing of George Floyd without denouncing all police officers and police departments across the country. Aside from mathematical equations, not many things in life are absolute. Greg's Tweet was inconsiderate, but does that make him a racist? I don't believe so. People are so quick to assume the role of judge, jury and executioner these days. One tweet does not erase a man's entire life's work in my opinion. There is not one single person walking this earth that hasn't done at least one thing s/he wishes they could take back. My box deaffiliated on Sunday. I cancelled my membership, and will find another box with more honor and loyalty.
I agree with Michael.
CrossFit doesn’t deserve forgiveness, but neither do the rest of us. We can certainly justify allowing bitter hatred and resentments to fester and enjoy free rent in our heads, but this serves no purpose other than to make us feel superior for a fleeting moment. Self-righteous anger doesn’t coexist well with productive anger. Don’t get me wrong, anger can accomplish amazing things, but only if it rises from truth and integrity and only if it targets a purpose. Whether we believe that disassociating from or staying with CrossFit achieves those higher purposes, we should do so with veracity and fortitude, not sanctimonious indignation. Personally, I believe the best investment for my anger and disappointment is to fight to redeem and illumine the CrossFit community that, even in its wretchedness, has done so much for me.
Very well said, CrossFit! Nobody is perfect. Everyone out there judging a man by one comment he posted without explaining context is being extremely unfair and selfish. We all struggle sometimes with getting our message across the “right way”, and we frequently assume that others are on the same page just because what we are trying to convey is so obvious to us in our own minds. Mr. Glassman has proven his unwavering dedication to health and fitness over the last 20 years, and his methodology changed lives of millions of people. It’s truly disappointing to see how quickly so many just followed the trend, jumped to conclusions and turned their back on the very person who directly contributed to who they are today, without giving him a chance to explain what he meant. CrossFitters are not supposed to be weak, we are leaders and hard workers, we take the difficult route and we think for ourselves. Its
not too late to stand up for Mr. Glassman’s legacy, it’s the right thing to do! This man deserves it like no other. Exciting future ahead with the new leadership. Best of luck to Dave Castro
and his team. ❤️🙏💪
The Crossfit community is like a family to many of us, and I’m sure we can all agree that each family has it’s share of problems. Coach Glassman made a major error in his personal judgement and has appropriately stepped away. Crossfit HQ made a massive mistake with their deafening silence and I accept their collective apologies. I’d ask each of us to remember that forgiveness is probably one of the hardest things for many of us to practice, and is more difficult than any HERO WOD. Please, let’s heal our family together and add our unified voices to this powerful movement.
Done, well said, time to move on. Change is happening, let's get on with it. We're staying an affiliate and will continue to provide our all-inclusive Fitness community the tools to better their lives.
I stand for equality and fairness. I respect diversity and other’s views. But I don’t understand why any corporation is apologizing to a specific group in our society. Did CrossFit discriminate against individuals because of their culture or race? Did CrossFit refuse to include any group in their mission, goals, organization or events? I’ve never heard or read any such actions. I don’t owe anybody an apology for behavior I don’t participate in or support, and neither does anybody else, regardless of your skin color. I read Glassman’s comment. He shouldn’t have used George Floyd’s name, but his comment was not made in the context of being racist or discriminatory. It was insensitive at most. People should be judged and held accountable for their actions individually. One person’s actions do not represent the character or beliefs of an entire culture. Any person at fault for the tragic death of Mr. Floyd should be held accountable. I don’t hear or see any outrage for the uninvolved Police Officers murdered during protests. I don’t see the media outrage for the thousands of businesses and multiple cities destroyed by protesters. They are people too. CrossFit has not reached out and made a special purpose of thanking, loving, and valuing my culture, nor any other I’ve seen. We have to treat one group over any other special? Isn’t that what we’re arguing against? Every culture has been oppressed and abused in history. Moving forward and standing for equality and fairness should be the goal. This cancel culture is ridiculous. I stand with Greg.
Well spoken, Allen.
Sorry Mr Beamen, but if your ancestors weren’t enslaved for over 400 years, and then segregated for decades and then targeted by law enforcement/the criminal justice system for some more decades then you don’t get to say that every culture has been oppressed and abused! That’s the bullshit white privilege that is perpetuating the varying ways racism shows up today. Someone doesn’t have to be saying the n word or outwardly discriminating against Black folks to still be racist. I urge you to educate yourself before jumping to saying these kinds of things just because this is what you learned around white folks. Read a book, get uncomfortable, learn about the country’s real history. It’s many folks like you in the CrossFit community that are turning the rest of us off, and trust me there are a lot of us!
Very well said.
Well said Allen.
I read the tweet, I read the buzzfeed article about the zoom call, Nicole Carrolls retirement, the multiple apologies and the comments. The part that makes me the most hurt and disappointed is the division this has brought to our sport based on the color of our skin. <<<<<<<< Read that again...the color of our skin. Our community had no idea that this level of disfunction and racism/bias was present at CrossFit HQ.
That is painful. CrossFit is supposed to be a safe place for us all to go to get better at ourselves, to work together as a community, and to honor the fallen. We cheer each other on all the way to the last person who finishes the WOD. Never at anytime when I was at any CrossFit gym did i ever think about anyones skin color. Now it has brought pain division and insecurity to our communities that are already hurting. CrossFit has changed many peoples lives and sometimes is the only constant through difficulty in life. Yes people make mistakes and there is so much grace for that friends but as an organization of power you cannot be racist or harbor racism, you must actively be working against it.
CrossFit HQ as all things this will either make or break you. This is one of many actions you will need to take to try to restore the trust of our community. Make good choices. Be better.
Our gym was never going anywhere but heartbroken over the turmoil. Love the letter, thank you CFHQ
-Cold Storage CrossFit
Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has flaws.
As a Christian, I can forgive.
Not sure the route our affiliate will take, but I will support their decision 100%.
Good luck.
I was shocked by the combination of the tweet and his response to Alyssa's e-mail from Rocket Community Fitness. The tone of Alyssa's e-mail was conversational. She eloquently discussed issues she noticed and wanted to work with Greg to solve them. His e-mail back to her was so harsh, hurtful, and inappropriate. A leader should respond to someone in a professional way. Even if he didn't agree with her points, he could have typed his thoughts in a more respectful tone and offered to to talk to her personally about the issues. He could have told her he understood her viewpoints but didn't agree, instead of going off on a toxic rant. I hope the next leader can treat people respectfully and be willing to listen to different points of view in a professional manner.
I have been doing CrossFit for 5 years. I’m a military veteran, so I’ve worked with every race out there and knew what equality was in the military. At my CrossFit box we’ve got a few African Americans that come to our gym. Now what Greg did, was completely wrong and insensitive. But we can’t crucify the whole CrossFit staff because of one mans stupidity. We do need equality across America. Will we actually ever see that? Probably not because of the small percentage of people that just want to see riots, fighting and they just like to see injustice. We are talking about 300 million people in America alone. But we can have change and more education on equality and racism. If you look at what Greg said and not crucify the rest of the staff and their Positive beliefs, it’s the same with the police. Everyone is crucifying ALL the police across America because of one mans stupidity and ignorance. I know there’s been more then just this one incident, but everybody knows that not all police are bad. I myself hopes this guy goes away for life for murder. But for CrossFit, it’s made me a healthier and stronger man. Just 7- months ago, I had a heart attack 4-hrs On Friday after the first week of the open October 11, 2019. I drove myself to the hospital and several doctors said “you should be here. (dead)”. They said I was in such good shape, that’s why I’m still here. So I give Greg, the Staff and my 2 boxes, CrossFit Sand Springs & KODA HQ Kudos for helping save my life. Now it’s time to come together, let Greg move on and let CrossFit HQ make any necessary changes and continue to Rock ‘n’ roll with fitness.
Nobody is crucifying the whole Crossfit staff. What parallel fake universe are you living in?
Damn Jeff, your not into this coming together are you? I was making a point from other comments (posts) I read. Some didn’t want Dave Castro in charge. Some wanted someone from the outside. Some box’s have already left the affiliate. It’s just my opinion.
Your the perfect example of how NOT to be. Thanks for sharing that. Try being positive in this situation and quit being a negative person. You might want to read more posts before you make an ass out of yourself.
Here's a list of resources for the team to read and work through as an initial step to becoming an active ally to the black community. Have the company read White Fragility and then have an open discussion about what they all learned. Hire someone to come in for some diversity training. Commit to ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion professional learning beyond an initial training. Just think of how you all espouse continued learning and physical training to improve yourselves and be better. Now commit to a similar course with respect to learning about race relations; publicly share these plans and update us on your progress. THIS will be how you get back into the good graces of the community. It's not a total lost cause, but you need far more than platitudes.
From my affiliate. This is a real statement and how HQ should’ve handled this from the beginning:
“It has been shocking and utterly heart breaking how CrossFit HQ has handled themselves in the last week. We do not condone their silence or comments in any way. CrossFit itself refers to a training methodology, not a community. We have banded together to create the greatest, most welcoming, all-inclusive community there is, proudly being able to call members family. And right now our family and the world needs us. We will continue to focus on only what we can and keep fighting injustices and racism in the world. We will figure out the best course of action for the gym soon, but until then remember the mission, Black Lives Matter. We love you all, and can’t wait to see you soon.”
It is never too late!
Good things can come from chrisis and mistakes. That's how we all learn and grow. I am sure the community is much stronger than this, and will grow from this situation.
----
Nunca es demasiado tarde.
Cosas buenas pueden surgir de las crisis y los errores. Es así como aprendemos y crecemos. Estoy segura de que esta comunidad es mucho más fuerte que esto y crecerá a partir de esta situación.
Thee without sin go ahead and cast the first stone. Mistake? Yes! Increase the Peace, stay strong and keep moving forward in a positive, healthy, all inclusive direction.
That's a great point!!
This was his mistake. We must judge a man by his actions, force him to take responsibility for those actions, and he must learn to accept the consequences of his actions. He can learn from his mistakes but he also must move on. If he learns not to be a racist then he won't make the same mistake twice.
I wouldn't keep your hopes up though.
Apology accepted. Done. I have heard zero criticism of Greg Glassman at my gym this week. Those I have spoke with personally see his tweet for what it was. It lacked clarity, and left a lot of room for interpretation, which was a huge mistake. His, and your, explanation is adequate, and accepted by all of the people that I have spoken to personally in the CrossFit community. I do not believe that the loud, condemning voices we hear right now represent the majority of the CrossFit community. We are so grateful for the solution to chronic disease that Greg has given to us. We forgive him, and you, for your flaws and mistakes. We have flaws as well that need to be forgiven so we embrace forgiveness. Forgiveness heals, and makes both the offended and the offender whole. I wish Greg the best, a long life of peace and immense satisfaction. He has helped so many people live better lives. I hope he stays involved with CrossFit, his labor of love. I would be so sad for anyone to lose their labor of love and purpose, especially someone like Greg who has given me so much. Please send to him this message and my love, support, gratitude, and full forgiveness.
Right on.
Greg Glassman founded CrossFit and is responsible for delivering a life-changing and paradigm-altering truth... He relentlessly attacks those who dilute or deny essential truths.
Don’t get me wrong I LOVE CrossFit and I appreciate all the lives that it has impacted but Glassman created a workout methodology, he didn’t discover the meaning of the universe and he’s not the voice of God. The terrible taste of the tweet aside the essential truths that he seems to have a problem with are the IMHE saying 2.2 million people could die if we didn’t do anything to mitigate Covid-19 which he somehow thinks has been disproven because only 110k people have died so far while everyone has been in quarantine (which doesn’t mean their model was wrong at all) and that racism is a public health crisis. So CrossfitHQ believes that is a dilution of the truth? Even in their apology they want to put Greg up on some pedestal he doesn’t belong on.
This statement was a lot of oops we were paralyzed in our indecision but offers zero substance. You are saying the black community is hurting right now, just like Glassman in his second tweet said that Floyd was a hero to the black community. It’s a lot of acknowledging that the black community is upset but zero acknowledgement that they are justified, that there is systemic racism and that they have a legitimate grievance with law enforcement.
This statement had zero acknowledgement about the lack of diversity in the CrossFit community and no steps to address it. The problem wasn’t indecision, the problem is that CrossFit refused and still refuses to say the things that need to be said because they are afraid to piss off a segment of the community. I love CrossFit, I love everyone I’ve ever met in the 4 affiliates I’ve been a member of and the dozens of boxes I’ve dropped into. But if they can’t handle hearing the essential truth that black lives matter then I don’t need to be in a community with them. It’s either Glassman and HQ can’t handle hearing it too or are silent because they think “Republicans buy nanos too.” One is moral bankruptcy and the other is cowardly greed, take your pick.

Thank you CrossFit HQ for your explanation and apology.
For society to function people must be allowed to apologize and atone for their mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. If an apology is offered, we must accept it. We're not mind readers.
That's how I would like to be treated. I'm sure it's how you'd want to be treated as well.
Thank you Greg Glassman.
Thank you CrossFit team.
Congratulations and thank you Dave Castro for stepping up and taking the lead.
That's a great point and I couldn't agree more. Glassman has apologized but he also must atone for his mistake. He should sell all of his interest in CrossFit and donate at least 10% of the proceeds to Black Lives Matter. That's how I would like to be treated and I'm sure that's how anyone else would want to be treated as well. Anything less is an insult.
It’s true for fact that people can make mistakes, but when you represent a important figure to a community, everything matters, every single word, every single step, so everything you do or say, all your acts do matters in a crazy way.
I hope they're sending Dave to PR training ASAP!
What the Black community of CrossFit (and beyond) needs and deserves is a plan of action that supports their community far beyond this moment in time. What the rest of the community needs to know is that this is a brand of integrity and that absolutely 0% of affiliation fees end up in Greg’s pocket.
Really messy and unfortunate damage has been done.
Trust is rebuilt by action- not words.
The trust has been broken.
I am a firm believer in giving people a chance to make things right and learn and grow and do better. If we chose to write off every asshole, instead of challenge them to DO BETTER, no one would grow. Sometimes we have to be the bigger person and be in charge of the change we wish to see. Right now, the Black community needs people to do this work and do it now and do it forever.
But the CrossFit community cannot lay it all out for you and demand what it needs. You must do more than buy time with an apology on your site. YOU must define those action steps and take the lead. YOU must do better.
I don’t know what the future of CrossFit holds but I still don’t know that I want to be a part of it. Action is needed.
I truly appreciate this statement and apology, and you're right it's a little too late. Some keeping focusing on the one tweet and that he's not racist because of all the great things he's done. I can't know what's in a man's soul. But it just wasn't one tweet. It was comments on a Zoom call, the inappropriate responses back to a long time affiliate owner. I'm still not hearing anyone addressing those issues. Oh and by the way, that tweet, it's still up on Twitter. Why?
The lack of communication to the affiliate owners not only about this situation but information in general (e.g. dropping off Facebook and Instagram, changes to the Games, etc.) has always been second hand. And while I understand that this and has been an affiliate model which I love, there needs to be a better structure of communication BOTH ways to CFHQ such as through an Affiliate Owner Association. Hearing that there were Zoom calls going on with owners about this through other media sources is shows a lack of respect to those have financial implications from the decisions being made - especially after being closed for 3 months.
I'm still hopeful (somewhat) that there will be additional changes coming. I think a better approach would have been to name Dave interim CEO until such time a thorough executive search could have been conducted to find the best individual. This feels rushed and easy. Actions moving forward will speak volumes.
The most disappointing thing out of all this mess is what it's done to the CrossFit community. The amount of vitriol I'm seeing posted between Crossfitters on social media is awful. If the public comments don't keep new members from joining, it'll be all this division. This is the last thing we needed with being closed for 3 months with no incoming revenue.
Did I expect a long, hard position statement from GG or CFHQ on the topic of Black Lives Matter, not really. But how hard is it to condemn racism? Every other major global fitness chain and brand were able to do it without absolutely no controversy whatsoever. Nike, Reebok, Adidas, F45, Equinox, Orange Theory, 24 HR Fitness, Soulcycle, Barry's, No Bull, Rogue and so many more. It could have been so easy.
Thanks Greg for your life changing insights and recognition regarding human health and fitness. Crossfit has changed my life for the better. Thank you for your vision and leadership with crossfit health.
You are and have been right about chronic disease, its a message the world needs to hear. What happened to you was wrong, your actions will always speak louder than words. Thank you for speaking truth as you saw it. #imwithgreg
This is a good apology and a good acknowledgment of your company's flaws (and there are clearly many). I want to echo some of the comments and ask that a clear action plan be communicated as soon as possible. If you want any hope of mending relationships with de-affiliated boxes, brands, sponsors and sanctioned events you need to be open and honest and you need to do it fast. I think i speak for everyone when I say it would be really great to see some proof that Greg has no more further input into the company and ideally, I'd like to see that he does not own or receive any further royalties from the CrossFit brand.
I believe in the methodology and I believe in the ability for this sport to bring everyone together. I acknowledge that Greg has been the biggest contributor in that but it is time for him to step away and take his views with him, we don't need that anymore and we need a fresh, diverse perspective from the top.
Someone at least needs to sign their name to this statement. Things are happening pretty quickly but Dave Castro needs to get out front with the personal commitments that he will be making.
Here is the TRUTH everyone needs to read.
https://www.theabjectlesson.com/2020/06/09/in-defense-of-greg-glassman/
WTF? Did you guys travel back in time or something?
"A few years ago we were in New Zealand – the Maori people, the native tribes, have been at war with the New Zealand government and they were working on a peace treaty. We happened to be visiting and one of the tribal leaders wanted to know if CrossFit could help with the destructive impact of diabetes on the natives. I didn’t even need to hear the rest to know what Greg would do"
Thank you for sharing this article. What a great read in the midst of all of this. I agree 100% with the statements made in this article. This was worth the time to read every word.....
This all feels a little too late, done begrudgingly and an apology draped in excuses for why you were actually right in the first place, you weren’t, you were wrong. It still doesn’t feel like you realize that, which is why you’re seeing the mass exodus, this is the (admittedly massive) straw that broke the camel’s back.
During the 2019 post-games panel, someone asked a question regarding the lack of diversity in the CrossFit games. Dave Castro openly mocked the question and didn’t bother to comment, moving on without regard for the true problem. I have no faith Dave is any less biased than Greg.
I was present for that. Considering the number of very diverse Games Athletes from virtually every nation with a CrossFit box, in fairness, it was a completely ignorant question, or designed specifically to create controversial theater.
It's proper from gentlemen to recognize their mistakes. Hope coach Greg truly feel the mistake and the community understand that we are not perfect.
Sadly that's not the way the coach has to retire...
My pray includes all of you.
Appreciate this post, look forward to the direction ahead and understand the position HQ was put in. The circumstances surrounding this event will be a bruise but will not define or discount everything that has been accomplished since CrossFit’s founding and will continue in the years to come.
Very sad to see Nicole’s departure as well but confident HQ can continue the work it has been doing for the overall health and wellness of the community.
Nice apology (really). Now where’s the action plan?
I’m only 21 and have been doing CrossFit for almost 6 years. I’ve grown up doing this sport. For Crossfit to release NO statement regarding the injustice towards black people in America until Greg decided to comment the most ignorant thing in the world, is shocking. There are black athletes and black box owners - imagine how they feel receiving no message of support from Crossfit. Being anti-racist requires active actions and speech AGAINST racism, not just a response to it. Take this experience and grow from it. When it comes to oppression, to be silent is to be on the side of the oppressor.
Thank you.
"That does not excuse the fact that Greg’s statements were incredibly insensitive and hurtful."
I think y'all forgot racist and misogynist. That is way more than just insensitive and hurtful cause if he was willing to do it in a public (social media) space, who knows what he really thinks/does when he is out of it.
A public flogging will be held tomorrow, Denisse.
I will stand with CrossFit no matter what. 8 years ago Greg’s CrossFit changed my life. Every human can make mistakes, I know he’s not racist even if I don’t know him. I will stay with CrossFit and remain affiliated with Greg or Dave Castro. Why are we so proud or incapable of recognizing and forgiving that mistake? Who are we to judge and tell who’s wrong or good? Please we are a community and Greg created that community. Don’t rush on your decisions and don’t blame Greg for everything that happens. CrossFit can solve all world issues but they are giving the best to fight the mess.
I am in this with you!! I love CrossFit, I myself have said some pretty insensitive things and in order to be forgiven I must be the first to forgive. I will stand with CrossFit just as I will stand with others that I disagree with; being human in the world where no one believes they are wrong is hard. I have been on both sides of this fight but I am a fighter and I love the CrossFit community and the imperfections that come along with being human and learning and growing.
Matthew Eastman, the whole point of this George Floyd issue is to not judge an entire organization by one persons actions......calling someone a racist because they support CrossFit as A 'brand' does not mean they support Glassmans' comment. Please rethink your statement to call Pablo a racist. We are all better than that.
Why haven't CFHQ sent any affiliates (definitely the south pacific boxes) emails during the Pandemic checking on the Owners well being? not all boxes make a lot of money off of Crossfit but still do it for their communities and for the love and passion shared in Crossfit. Yet no one can even email affiliates during the real pandemic, yet now people are all up in arms over Greg Glassmans comments which we all shoud be, but dont forget CFHQ as much as they are trying to say they dont believe in what hes said, they also haven't done much to reach out to the wider community. We all know we were all stuck at home during COVID lockdowns, but my email was still working and so were most peoples emails id say. The people that are walking away are doing so rightly....CFHQ and its Old CEO has let the whole Community down, dont try to just push the blame to Glassman now because of his words recently. Very dissappointed.
Thank you first this The lack of communication to the affiliate owners through this social media fiasco as well as the pandemic has been awful. The only way affiliate owners find out what's going on is to follow social media.
I have been a member of CrossFit for four years now and I absolutely loved it. I love the workouts, but most of all I loved this community. I would extol that "Crossfit is for everyBODY!" because it seemed that although it was a majority white space, great effort was made to make people feel welcomed no matter their sex, race, body type, body ability, or sexual orientation. CrossFit honored hard work, and that is all that you had to bring to the table.
To be honest, as an African American male, I did not even look for a response from this organization. I am used to white silence around issues of race and I am accustomed to corporate pandering. Crossfit could simply put out a perfunctory statement filled with boilerplate #unity #together #love language and check the box and move on.
To read that there was a major deliberation around putting out a statement condemning someone placing their knee on another's neck for nearly 9 minutes is disheartening. It wasn't hard guys. It wasn't hard.
Not hard at all
For such a long apology, there’s shockingly little content and a whole lot of excuses. I’m wondering why there are no actual action steps. Will you recruit Black (and other POC) team members to HQ? Will the company donate to organizations that work toward equity? Will you create “scholarships” so Black youth who can’t afford CrossFit can do it (like OUTWOD)? Literally any action?
Well said, words without action, no matter how many times they are repeated, are still meaningless. I sure hope that CrossFit can make an action to plan to actually help the Black Lives Matter movement and not just pay lip service to it.
Spot on
EXACTLY. this is a load of PR, please someone sponsor us in the future BS. You nailed it.
You are forgiven. Thank you for taking time to carefully process and make responsible decisions. It is a tough position to be put in. You are forgiven.
Matthew Eastman you are part of this nations' problem.....
I wish Greg well. It was easy to be angry at his actions over the past week. But it was never about assassinating his character, just letting him know how far out of line he was. The Crossfit methodology has improved my life in many ways and i'll always appreciate him spearheading all of the Crossfit causes.
This thoughtful statement is overdue, but greatly welcomed. I truly hope, as mentioned, the need to maintain the human relationship is priority. At the affiliate level, there are personal relationships made everyday from people being open and transparent with each other - genuine bonds. These individual connections are built upon trust and accountability, the only way to build friendships. What was hard to swallow, was to witness the parent organization not resemble the culture of the affiliates, almost inhuman. In my opinion, the course to regain the trust from those that have been betrayed is to reconnect with us on a human level. Actions that support communities that are facing hardships inequity should be prioritized. CrossFit has prided itself in leading virtuous science but has missed the mark in social-ecology. With respect there are more variables in unhealthy outcomes than sugar consumption.
Thank you and best wishes.
Together! 😍
Sad. Can’t believe you guys caved in to a bunch of bullshit
I agree. I know I'm the minority in doing it, not just after how glassman was attacked by affiliates, but also how the community felt the need to explain why they were 'silent for so long' is shit, that I canceled my box membership.
Agreed. This is not, or should not be, a political organization.
Fully agree. Seems like there is a race by corporations to see who can virtue signal the loudest. That does not solve any problems.
yeah its bullshit to condemn racism and off color remarks...how dare they
Supporting Black people asking/begging to not be brutalized regularly but police = politics/virtue signalling for many of you.
How you so easily disassociate yourself from other humans' very real, very mortal struggle is sad, and endlessly disgusting. Those front helped belief are why this country cannot be great yet... Many of you sincerely feel there is a group of Americans who are less worthy of dignity, whose concerns and violent reality is less worthy of your empathy simply because they are of a different color skin.
CrossFit, thank you. I am with you.
For the athletes and affiliates who wanted change, is Mr. Glassman still the owner of CrossFit Inc. ? If a former affiliate were to re-join would Mr. Glassman recieved directly or indirectly any portion of those affiliate fees?
Thank you

Very good question
Breathe everybody, breathe.
If anybody was looking to CFHQ as a moral compass that was your first mistake.
Let’s get off the dog piling get to work America.
Maybe if ya all had a little more tropical
weather in your life we’d all be better;)
Hope to see ya in Maui 🤙🏼
Glad to be part of something bigger, better and always improving..
CrossFit has truly been a transformative experience for me, and I feel privileged that I’m a part of this community and have been for over 10 years. However, while we as individuals all make mistakes, a compounding series of them does indicate a pattern. The CrossFit HQ apology rings true, but the initial actions of the CrossFit HQ hierarchy fall short of real structural change that likely is necessary. Yes, honest reflection and a promise to do better is a good start, but here are a few ideas that should be explored. First, Greg should divest enough of his stock to be a minority voting shareholder, so as to distance himself from CrossFit decision making. Second, an independent review by an outside entity should assist in evaluating what has gone wrong at HQ, and come up with recommended changes. And, finally, nothing against Dave Castro, but I don’t think he should be the permanent CEO. He’s been much too close to the situation and the culture to be the long term solution. It’s time for CrossFit to grow and become even better than it has been. Sometimes companies as they grow need new leadership for the next iteration of growth. That time appears to be now. An independent board would likely recommend that someone from outside the existing hierarchy be chosen, we’d have to see. CrossFit isn’t going away, thankfully, but it does need to move in a new direction.
Strongly agree with these recommendations.
1) Divest Greg
2) Please not Castro
3) Independent Review
I'll add to that, and this should actually be #1:
Establish a team to solve the systemic diversity challenges in this community.
Short of all of these actions I don't see myself sticking with the CF brand much longer.
Totally agree
Apology accepted.
I wish I had had the time and the skill to write this:

Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Hari, good perspective here
👏👏👏
Well worth the read. Glassman's character very ably defended.
Excellent
The fact that so many of you truly believe a White man can't POSSIBLY do business with, do charity work for, and associates with Black people without sincerely loathing them on some deep level is amusing and sad all at once. It's possible. Hell, I'd wager it's even likely. Considering he made money and improved his image with Black people (and passed as another White saviour in Africa) as outlined in this article... But simply couldn't find ANY worth employing at the top levels of CF (strange how that is so deadener the case 🤔) is neither unique, novel, coincidental, or subtle.
It's a gameplan repeated ad infinitum. We're good enough to benefit you monetarily, but not to share your table.
Thank you. Let’s do better. Let’s be better. Let’s continue to help thousands of people improve their lives.
I can’t wait to see where Dave takes CrossFit from here.
I completely accept all of this. As a fitness company I personally wasn’t looking for any kind of statement to be made by you.
The community loves you guys at CrossFit HQ. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
"FoUnD aNoThEr RaCiSt!" Good job, gestapo.
Nicholas Crooks that dude has some serious problems lol.
No they don’t!
Thank you for such a candid response. I hope the journey from here is less fraught, and lives up to the lofty aspirations set forth in this memo.
If you think this is candid I've got some magic beans to sell you. They lost their big sponsors, and because of the nature of what Glassman said, they've likely become marketing kryptonite for any new big-money sponsors. This response was carefully crafted to hopefully keep their investments growing. Candid, if anything, it is not.
Candid? No. There was nothing candid or authentic about that response. It’s seriously not that hard to apologise and do better. But you have to mean it first.
Why Didn’t CrossFit Just Say Something?
