About

The mission of the Safety Advisory Board is to help CrossFit maximize our continued commitment to safety by expanding and improving the protocols that are core to how we run our competitions and support our athletes. The Advisory Board is an independent group that brings an expert perspective on the highest levels of safety standards.

MEMBERS

Robert C. Oh, MD, MPH

Dr. Robert C. Oh is a family physician who has a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine. He earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, and completed a family medicine residency at DeWitt Army Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Subsequently, Oh completed a faculty development fellowship at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and earned his Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. He has held leadership and academic positions as associate program director, program director, chief of family medicine, and chief medical officer. He has more than 20 years of clinical and educational experience. After completing his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the National Capital Military Consortium in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2014, Oh was hand-selected as the Physician Lead for the Performance Triad – A Health Performance and Optimization initiative for the United States Army in 2014-2016. He retired from the United States Army after 22 years of service, which included two years of operational and combat experience deployed to Kosovo and Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. In 2020, he was selected as the VA Puget Sound Associate Chief of Staff for Education, responsible for over 1,500 Health Professions Trainees annually. In his new role as Chief Clinician Well-Being Officer, he is a strategic leader supporting the Reducing Burnout and Optimizing Organizational Thriving (REBOOT) program at VA Palo Alto, California.

Rich Froning, BS (EXE), 10-Time CrossFit Games Champion

Rich Froning is the proud owner of Rich Froning Fitness, LLC, and works out of Mayhem Fitness. Froning is well-known in the CrossFit community after winning four back-to-back individual CrossFit Games championships (2011-2014) and being named the “Fittest Man in History.” Froning also won the worldwide CrossFit Open for three consecutive years (2012-2014), and when he retired from individual competition after the 2014 season, he captained his affiliate’s team, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom, to back-to-back Affiliate Cup championships in 2015 and 2016 and a run of four consecutive from 2018-2022 for six total Affiliate Cup championships. Froning holds a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from Tennessee Tech University, and currently resides in Tennessee with his wife and three children.

Caity Matter Henniger, CSO, Rogue Fitness

Caity Matter Henniger currently serves as the Chief Sales Officer at Rogue Fitness. Henniger is among the founding group at Rogue and has been an integral part of building the company from 2007 into what it is today. She oversees a team of 700, growing the Rogue Fitness brand and maintaining its reputation as the leading fitness equipment manufacturer. Henniger is a dedicated CrossFit athlete, and she notably won the CrossFit Games in 2008. She is the Director of the Rogue Invitational, and has attended hundreds of CrossFit events and covered the Games as a broadcaster with ESPN3.com. Henniger is a proud resident of Columbus, Ohio, and a graduate of Ohio State University. A long-time competitive athlete, she played guard for the Ohio State Buckeye women’s basketball team and spent two years playing in the WNBA. She currently resides in Columbus with her husband and Rogue Fitness founder, Bill.

Brian McGuire, MS, ATC

Brian McGuire, MS, ATC, brings extensive elite sports medicine expertise to the CrossFit Games Safety Advisory Board. As Lead Athletic Trainer for the NFL Scouting Combine since 2008 and an NFL Player Health and Safety Program Injury Spotter since 2017, he has played a crucial role in athlete safety at the highest levels of professional sports. McGuire's Olympic experience includes serving as Chief Athletic Trainer for Rowing and Canoe/Kayak (Sprint) events during the 1996 Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, he directs the Marine Corps Human Performance Branch at Training and Education Command in Quantico, Virginia, where his work includes oversight of the development and implementation of USMC general and occupational fitness tests and standards. He retired as a Colonel from the Marine Corps Reserve in 2016 after 33 years of service.

Allison Brager, Ph. D.

Dr. Allison Brager is an active-duty neuroscientist supporting Special Forces. She is a former CrossFit Games team athlete and individual Regionals athlete. In addition to participating in every CrossFit Open since 2011 (including while deployed), she has her CrossFit Level 1 credential. Brager has completed advanced training in austere medicine under the leadership of current and former Special Forces personnel to include water search and rescue and high-angle ropes and rescue holding certifications in advanced SCUBA and Advanced Wilderness Life Support. She is presently an applicant for the NASA Astronaut Program, having reached the semifinal round of assessment and selection in 2020.

Manuel Cruz, Asst. Chief Patrol Agent, U.S. Border Patrol Academy

Manuel "Manny" Cruz has nearly two decades of border security and enforcement experience. Currently, he is a member of the executive leadership team at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy (Basic Training) where he leads a team of agents and professional staff, and provides basic training for approximately one thousand new agents annually. Prior to his current role, Cruz spent most of his career within the U.S. Border Patrol, Special Operations Group (SOG) as a member of the Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) unit. As a BORSTAR team member, he specialized in technical rope rescue/access and swift/flood water rescue. He has participated in and led missions and training across the globe, including many high-profile natural disaster and humanitarian crisis response/rescue missions.

Michael Cohen, Olympian, CEO of USA Masters Weightlifting

Michael Cohen is a native of Savannah, Georgia, born to Howard and Carol Cohen. Cohen made a name for himself in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, having won many National, Junior National, Senior, and Master Championships. He is married to Sheryl Cohen. They have four children. Cohen has coached athletes who have medaled at all of the following events: Junior Worlds, Senior Worlds, Master Worlds, Pan-Am Championships, Pan-Am Games, and the Olympics. He has produced 43 Senior National Champions, 82 Jr National Champions, 41 Youth National Champions, 31 Jr. World Team Members, nine Senior World Team members, four Youth World Team members, and three Olympians.

Mark Ritchie, Ph. D.

Mark Ritchie, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the International Sustainable Development Studies Institute and the owner of CrossFit Chiang Mai. ISDSI is an innovative study abroad program for American college and university students, founded 25 years ago and based out of Chiang Mai, Thailand. ISDSI courses are semester-long experiential learning expeditions into the diverse cultures and ecosystems of Thailand, with students backpacking up into remote mountain tribal villages in the North of Thailand, sea kayaking the islands of the South, and living and learning with local communities. Ritchie is an expert on complex risk management in international and expedition settings, frequently teaching, consulting, leading workshops, and presenting at professional conferences on applying best practices in risk management to new and innovative contexts.
