Scaling:
Despite the volume of GHD sit-ups and the strength required for weighted pull-ups, experienced athletes will still be able to work at a pace that challenges conditioning. Newer athletes might be able to use the GHD but should be cautious about doing too many reps if they blaze through the pulling modifications.

10 weighted pull-ups

Beginner Option:

Holding db between legs yourself was pretty tough. If someone could guide how to do it without anyone putting db between legs.

All the DBs up to 35# were being used and no 15# plates so used next lower. Guess it was optimal anyway as pull-ups were the crux. I forgot how engaged the quads are in GHDs until today after doing Bert.

As rx’d, 4 rounds + 3 pull-ups.


Dumbbell weighted pull-ups suck.  Would much rather strap on a vest or even use a weight belt.  Alternated between putting dumbbell between ankles and between thighs.  Neither strategy was great. Did after Box Squats [255x3]x6.

Unweighted pull-ups

Working out in the Breckinridge Rec Center. Tons (literally) of equipment, but all the pull-up bars too high for weighted pull-ups, and those within reach are the funky cybex machines with oddly angled grips, which is what I had to use.

Globo wod: first things first if you don't do GHD situps often scale the reps back or substitute a different movement. Uncle Rhabdo is not to be messed with. Subs for GHD situps are 2 to 1 abmat situps, situps on an incline board, weighted situps, or stick situps on an abmat. You can also sit perpendicular on a bench with your feet under heavy dumbbells and do situps touching the ground behind you. Weighted pullups as rxed. If you don't have a pullup bar do heavy lat pulldowns.

Champions Club Scaling Notes


RANT

I kind of lose track of things I mention in these notes, but just in case I figured I'd cite my sources for where most of the thinking comes from. Besides Coach Glassman, the major culprit for the thinking behind scaling workouts was Carl Paoli. If any of you look in the old CFJ archive he had some absolutely golden content through his framework Position-Movement-Purpose, the "purpose" part being the real eye-opener for me. Then we have Kelly Starrett, who, again, was featured in a ton of early CFJ videos; even though things like his Movement Hierarchy played a big role in how I view scaling up and down, the most impactful thing I heard him say (off the top of my head) came in A Language to Diagnose pt 2 (if I recall correctly) when he said something to the extent of, "CrossFit can be the best diagnostic tool for deficiencies; the fitness we gain is a byproduct." And finally, Dr. Romanov, who helped me understand that nature is the standard we have to continually hold ourselves against; am I using gravity on my pull-ups? Is my bodyweight being applied to my advantage on rope climbs? So if any of you are in a certain mood, go back through the archives in the old CFJ and check up on Kelly, Carl, and Dr. R.

Do I want to preserve the core-to-extremity part of the GHD (kb swings could be a sub) or the pulling from the hips (L-sit or knees to elbows), or just the general changing orientation (sit-up)
