Scaling:
The beginner should practice time in the inversion, either in a handstand, or holding an object overhead. Athletes of all levels should first develop the strength in a strict handstand push-up before performing a kipping handstand push-up.

scaled HSPU to yoga block, otherwise strict. cleans at 185lbs.

HSPU in the round of 12 is where things went south, turned into doubles and singles after 5 reps I think. Cleans all power and singles.

As rx’d, 101 reps.  Through 18/6 and 11 of 21 HSPUs.


Unbroken HSPUs through 9, then 8-4 / 10-5 / 6-6-3-3 / 5-3-3.  Singles on cleans.  Four reps off my best in 2017, but same score as I got in 2015.  Maybe could have pushed faster through the cleans – no misses, and all reps felt good.

Champions Club Scaling Notes


RANT

This is knowing your history can help understand the workout's intention. If this workout was first published in like 2006 or 2007, I would assume the cleans are a full squat and the handstand push-ups are strict. But the first time this workout came up was in 2015, and it was designed as part of a competition that is intended to gradually weed people out, as it rightfully should; I read this as power cleans and kipping handstand push-ups. What variation you do depends on what your limiting factor is.


WORKOUT THEMES

Short duration and medium weight. Testing the coordination/stamina of handstand push-ups and cleans. Core to extremity, jumping with weight, changing orientation, and pushing are all themes too.


ASSUMED

You have someone watching your workout and letting you know how many reps you are supposed to do each set. Also, handstand push-ups can be a cardio piece, like of like legless rope climbs yesterday.


MAIN DECISION

Keep the intensity and modify the movements/reps, or keep things as listed and add time.


TECHNIQUE SCALE

Practice kipping handstand push-up or handstand descent, cleans at whatever weight, go for like 20 minutes


CONSISTENCY SCALE

4 rounds of:

1:00 dumbbell strict press or strict handstand push-up

1:00 cleans


INTENSITY SCALE

AMRAP in 8 minutes of:

3 kipping handstand push-ups

3 heavy-ish cleans
