Attended the CrossFit Level 1 training course last weekend, Feb. 22-23, 2020, at Cross Fit King of Prussia (KOP) in Bridgeport, PA... First, I would like to thank gym owner, Aimee Lyons, for opening up her gym, knowledge and guidance for us to learn and grow from. IT was an exceptional experience and her gym helped in that epic experience. Secondly, I would like to thank the awesome and knowledgeable trainers, led by Austin Malleolo, Sarah Mills, Jon Mears, Mike Marrone and Aimee, for passing along your knowledge and passion to all of us, and for creating a fun, competitive environment where we were able to learn, grow and strive for our best!! I truly appreciated your hospitality and guidance. I know we will make excellent coaches and looking forward to what the future holds in the world of CF. Hope to see you all in the future, until then... Keep Grinding and Fight on!
Thanks Again,
John White
PS- Just received my results, and I PASSED......

"The authors of this editorial have previously worked with and received funding from Coca-Cola, ILSI, and other industry or industry-funded groups."
Yikes, and I agree with these paid mercenaries on this one particular issue of nutritional epidemiology. But then, so does Zoe Harcombe, Asheem Malhotra, Gary Taubes, Mike and Mary Dan Eades, and a whole cadre of very well educated , thoughtful individuals who agree that nutrition is exquisitely impactful on the progression of chronic disease. The call is for more randomized, controlled studies, but not an abandonment of the hypotheses being tested. For what is a hypothesis, if it is not a starting point for further investigation?

It is not advisable to read the editorial, if you are not interested in biased propaganda. This Crossfit summary is quite enough and essential for the purpose. The typical ILSI approach is to sow unsecurity and confusion, thus the case in the background is inconclusive, nothing should be done except more research. Read: waste time and maintain the achieved status quo (market position of the financial interest behing the non-profit body). One quote:
" we posit that while dietary intake is an obvious and essential component of health, it is a trivial risk factor for obesity, metabolic, and chronic diseases". They seem to like "eat less move more" and sugar is just calories and "genes "...
It is quackery to claim, that diet alone cures cancer. It is even more quackery to claim, that diet has no role in cancer development or that diet as an adjunct measure for cancer cure has no effect. Based on e.g. Crossfit articles on this topic.
ILSI etc seem to have it right in one aspect: epidemiology sucks. Because it produces random and contradictionary results, which are even too much for the ILSI's of the world.

Brilliant painting at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. If you have the opportunity to see it, it's a must, and the rest of the works in this space will not disappoint. Caillebotte's painting was rejected from the 1875 Salon show, as it was seen as a vulgar interpretation of laborers at work.

Dietary recall studies are incredibly error prone, to the point of being useless. This paper points out that 80% of the evidence used to establish the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) is based on this flawed data. The DGA is used by doctors and educators to advise everyone over the age of 2 what to eat. The section on fats from their website is troubling:
“Less than 10% of your daily calories should come from saturated fats. Foods that are high in saturated fat include butter, whole milk, meats that are not labeled as lean, and tropical oils such as coconut and palm oil. Saturated fats should be replaced with unsaturated fats, such as canola or olive oil.”
and
“Oils, including those from plants: canola, corn, olive, peanut, safflower, soybean, and sunflower. Oils also are naturally present in nuts, seeds, seafood, olives, and avocados.”
Their recommended oils are pro-inflammatory and prone to go rancid. When fatty acids from these oils are incorporated into your cell membranes, they are too soft, so cholesterol is added to stiffen the cell membranes. These oils might lower your cholesterol, but for a very counter-productive reason.
The unreliability of survey data makes it possible to find evidence to support nearly any claim you want to make. Most papers will pass peer review as long as claims are backed by citations, especially if the author knows the biases of the reviewers. But this science by citation is not really science. It can create a feedback loop where a certain point of view, once established perpetuates itself. The article from a weeks ago on the “Alzheimer’s Cabal” is a good example.
This paper does go off the rails a bit (in my opinion) around p.13 (Does “Diet” have a non-trivial impact on health?). The argument seems to be that the quality of evience is so bad that diet doesn't matter. Of course this isn’t true! And they cite a paper called “In Defense of Sugar" several times, which I haven’t read yet, but assume was funded by Big Soda. Aside from that, it’s a profoundly interesting paper.

This weekend, February 22nd thru 23rd, I attended CF-L2 seminar hosted by Todd and Cherie at the Crossfit Jax box in Jacksonville Beach, FL. Both instructors were outstanding in their presentation. They were very knowledgeable of the subject of becoming an effective trainer and presented the information thoroughly. The best part of the course was the honest feedback and care they provided to each seminar attendee. I learned valuable information from them that I will definitely utilize when training people. The CrossFit Jax box owners, Chris and Megan, were very welcoming and their box was very spacious. Great weekend!
