I agree with Matt D., that the big take away for the Trainer here is that 90% of cholesterol is made by the body and therefore hard to control levels with diet.

I also like Dr. Mann's quote at the end, "If science isn't quarrelsome, argumentative and contentious, then it isn't any good."

I think this is a good lesson, not only for the lay person but also the doctor, to keep in mind when looking at nutrition science. It seems that questioning the consensus is something more readily accepted in the pure sciences and less so in the world of nutrition. Question everything!

I think that for the general population the best advise from this article is to remember that 90% of cholesterol is produced by the body. Trying to overly focus on lowering your cholesterol intake by restricting certain foods is really just a distraction from the real problem (exercising being one).

In 1955, Dr. Mann became an Associate Director of the Framingham Heart Program. Despite being on the cholesterol frontlines, he withdrew, realizing that cholesterol in the diet was being villainized without real data to support this position. That Dr. Mann lived to see 95 years is the proverbial buttercream frosting on the cake of his dissent.

This video, and others like it, should be a reminder that capacity can be increased or regained at any age. At CrossFit 204, we've seen incredible strength gains in clients over 60, and we have documented training-earned increases in muscle mass while our clients' peers are losing strength and independence through sedentarism. We've started people on box/chair squats and seen them lose their canes as their legs become stronger. Eventually, they don't need the chair at all.

"Our understanding is that the needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind. One needs functional competence to stay out of the nursing home. The other one wants functional dominance to win medals." - Greg Glassman.

Those of us who have been around CrossFit for any amount of time know this statement to be true through countless observations over time. Convincing those outside of the fold, however, is a difficult task (especially, it seems, the ones we care about most). This video, and others like it, are invaluable in spreading the truth to those are otherwise slow to believe. I proudly passed this one around the table at brunch today to the naysayers whose "creaky knees" or "achy backs" surely couldn't survive the "crazy CrossFit stuff." They had no retort. These are an amazing asset to all of us.

I don't think this is meant to fall under a "zone/keto/paleo/etc." diet. I think the idea is just to eat real food and they're giving some simple ideas to do just that.

I think for these videos it's more about the balance / ratios of protein, carbs and good fats for proper nutrition. If you are following the Zone you can raise or lower the portions accordingly.

This is putting a positive spin on a neutral result. Classic industry playbook move.

Also, this is coming from the same organization (the NHLBI) that partnered with Mars, Inc.–a candy company–in 2014 to see if cocoa flavanols reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Scaled and subbed with 26lbs dumbbells (80% of bar weight) and ran on elliptical trainer "Level 12" for 40 calories.

10:47

I figured that vigorous rowing is like 600 cal/hour, and it should take me like 4 minutes to cover 1000m; therefore ... 40 calories. In the end, a spot-on 7:59 of total time was consumed by the elliptical trainer; while thrusters/switching took the remaining 2:48 which was a tad slow.

Attn: @LYNNE PITTS. I agree w/ the other comments about this site update. While I understand the intention & appreciate HQ’s hard work; it has removed some of the inclusive & warm community feel by omitting things like – scaling options – links to the movements – pictures next to the poster’s name. Particularly to new users, i think it gives the impression of exclusivity & that intended demographic is the above average athlete, certainly not a beginner or novice. Just my .02

I liked the scaling and what the intention of the workout was going to be. The only positive is that today I did Rx though my time was slow. I doubt in the future I will be able to do the Rx weights as I am not a strong lifter and I always appreciated the scaled options being provided.

Attn: @LYNNE PITTS. I agree w/ the other comments about this site update. While I understand the intention, it has removed some of the inclusive & warm community feel by omitting things like – scaling options – links to the movements – pictures next to the poster’s name. Particularly to new users, I think it gives the impression of exclusivity & the intended demographic is for experienced users w/ an above average fitness level, not beginners or novices. Just my .02

I was initially thrown off by the new format as well but after closer consideration, I found appreciation for it's likeness to the original website; that which I remember from my first days of Crossfit in 2009 (with a more modern arrangement, of course). Also, I use the mobile browser exclusively and this new structure seems very "no frills" and functional. I can accept any of these aesthetic changes; HQ is still providing high quality, free content after all

Commented on: Dr. Mann and the Heart Mafia

First, Mann’s comments here are particularly interesting in light of what we know now - 40 years later, the AHA has implicitly recognized dietary cholesterol has a negligible impact on blood cholesterol or on heart disease risk. But given this was a recent development, the question follows - why did it take so long?

The commercial interests Mann points out are easy to blame. Given cholesterol is exclusively found in animal foods, many in the food industry served to gain from a shift from cholesterol-laden foods to substitutes, and others like processed food manufacturers could shift to plant-based ingredients. Whether this directly affected guidelines and scientific thinking or not (and there’s plenty of evidence it did), it was easy for food manufacturers to comply with restrictions on dietary cholesterol and so shift what the public thought of cholesterol in their food via marketing claims.

And yet, Mann’s argument about the impact of consensus on NIH funding may be at least as impactful. If, as Dr. Levy argues, “funding is determined by peer review”, as soon as a peer group coalesces on a viewpoint it will become more challenging for contrary views to be seen as worthy of funding, and so for them to be tested and potentially substantiated (unless they can find private support). And so a hypothesis that gains an “early lead” can grow to dominate the conversation simply through this implicit suppression of alternative views.

There’s a valid pushback - this same argument would seem to justify allocating more funding to anti-vaxxers and other “fringe” scientists. But I believe there is a middle ground, where funding is concentrated toward a single hypothesis only when it is backed by data clear, consistent and direct enough that we do not need to explore any other hypotheses. The same error Mann describes recently shunted billions of research dollars down another potentially fruitless path, investigating amyloid beta as a direct cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Maybe it’s the idea of a peer-reviewed funding process that needs to be assessed.

Champions Club Scaling Notes:

Hey guys, I'm going to start doing this as often as I remember and hopefully you'll find it helpful. We follow the main site at our affiliate and I'm just going to give my thoughts for scaling this for a group. So here goes the first of hopefully many...

I look at this one as a sprint, so the things I look at for limiting factors would be rack position on thrusters and distance on the rower. Dumbbells would be a good idea for a lot of people in my opinion.

Now for equipment, we don't have rowers so we'll run. Some of our track kids might do a 1,000, but most will probably do 600 or 800. Now since we're in Michigan, so we're ready to run in anything except ice. If it's icy, we'll probably scale to running jump ropes (alternating feet and focusing on the Figure-4 Runner's Pose) and dumbbells for everyone (to save on space/barbells rolling around).

We have a few people who are working through some knee things, so instead of the impact on jump ropes we'll either stationary bike or do light weighted step-ups keeping the shin vertical. Anything one-arm would be good for thrusters if need be.

We're a bit behind on the workouts because of a few Christmas theme workouts we do, so hopefully we'll catch up on this one soon!

One more post from me, and then I'll mostly get out of your way for another year. BTW, I've had lots of requests for my WOD archives file, and from many places in the world too! (See yesterday's comments if you are interested.)

But to the crux of this post - It’s once again time for my annual review of my "Why I work out" statement, to re-validate what I'm doing. (It's remained virtually unchanged in 15 or so years, so I don't think it'll need any tweaking, but it's still worth the annual review.) To put it in context, I'm one of the "other 99%ers" as Bingo says, i.e. I'm a CrossFit athlete and use it solely for self-improvement; I don't do it to be a Games contender. I scale, without guilt. Here's the "Why I work out" verbiage for those interested:

Why I work out

My primary workout goals:

1) To remain functionally active, capable and unintimidated, across broad time and modal domains and demands, relatively pain free, for as long as I live. Said another way - to increase my Healthspan, the span of healthy life.

2) To set a good example for my two (now young adult) children, especially to counter the many negative influences on health and fitness that children encounter.

What's required for primary goals accomplishment:

- Remain relatively flexible

- Be fall tolerant

- Minimize chances of fall

- Minimize bone-density loss

- Not become overweight

- Not cause workout-related injury

- Minimize physical recovery time in case of injury

- Maximize the percentage of body parts that are "in shape", meaning they could withstand being subjected to a rigorous test and not fail

My secondary workout goal is to potentially increase how long I might live, that is, to increase my lifespan.

What's required for secondary goal accomplishment:

- Reduce stress

- Have restful sleep

- Increase self-confidence

- Increase feeling of self-worth

- Maintain optimum weight

- Consume healthily

- Everything in moderation

- Be happily married

- Maintain a positive mental state

- Stay mentally active and challenged

- Be part of social communities

- Remain active

Additional reasons I've had (in past phases of life):

- Helped me (better) withstand the physical rigors of flying tactical jet aircraft. (I’m doing competition aerobatics these days, and being Fit really helps my “G” tolerance, but to an even larger degree also drastically reduces my recovery timeline after a hard practice flight!)

- Provided an "insurance policy" to better cope in case I ever had to eject out of my jet (and potentially in hostile territory).

-------------------------------

Review complete; looks good for another year.
